Easy, Breezy Summer Sewing

Leggings, tunics, and dresses top the list.

M6353

When I think of summer sewing projects, I think quick and easy. I want to wear things that are light and uncomplicated. Short leggings, cute tunics, and summer dresses are at the top of the list. McCall’s summer pattern collection has just that vibe.

A cute convertible dress, #6353, is a great answer for a summer project. It’s easy to sew, and with its six ways to wear, it is perfect for countless summer events. Make it in a two-way knit fabric, either in a solid or with a small nondirectional print.

Another fashionable option is a women’s sized dress, #6363. The flattering draped waistline detail is drawn to the side and topped with a feminine bow. Choose knee- or ankle-length, and sleeveless or short sleeve. Or, make simple pattern alterations to create sleeves and hem any length you want.

Leggings are among the hottest garments of the season. Offered in misses and women’s sizes, #6360 has six styles. Choose your length, from above the knee to midcalf, and your decorative feature, including ruching, a zipper at the lower side hem, or a fabric panel along the side for a figure-slimming color block.

The leggings theme continues in #6364. This tunic, tank, and leggings combo is a dedicated women’s size pattern. Sizes range from 18W to 32W. Look hip and summery in this flattering trendy pattern.

Finish off your easy summer wardrobe with an ensemble from Palmer & Pletsch, #6355. This uncomplicated grouping includes a semifitted top and tank and a sheath dress with multiple sleeve-length options. The fabric selection is as versatile as the garment choices; choose from a variety of lightweight wovens or knits.

McCall’s has many more fun and easy to sew projects in their summer collection.

I am to be mother of the groom in August. I know I can never be satisfied with a "garment-rack" dress, but so far no pattern collection has come near what I want. There is always too much bare, crepey skin showing of cleavage, back or shoulders. I am 66. However, I still have pretty shapely legs and won't want a dowdy, mid-calf or floor length for a 2 pm ceremony. I've been sewing for 50 of my 66 years and know my way around quality and won't pay dearly for it. I wear a size 12 or 14. Any suggestions?
