Spring is on its way! Here in Connecticut, the snow is nearly all melted; flowers are just starting to make their presence known; and our winter clothes are making their way to the back of the closet. Now is the time to refresh your spring wardrobe. Simplicity Pattern Company makes it easy with their latest collection. Featured are three ensemble patterns, perfect for spring.
From the Threads Magazine Collection is pattern 1883. This three-piece ensemble has a jacket with two sleeve length variations, a dress, and pants. The Jacket has an optional shawl collar, dart tucks at center front in a sunburst design, and a single-button closure–all creating a sleek silhouette. Finish the look with a stunning, one-of-a-kind button. The A-line dress has princess seams and a V-shape neckline. The darted pants have a side zipper and a faced waistline.
Easy-to-sew, pattern 1884 features a top, dress, pants and jacket. The top and dress have a gathered front, a neckline yoke, and a breezy Spring/Summer look. The kimono-style jacket has a drapey front and short- or three-quarter length cut-on sleeves. Finish the outfit with simple elastic-waist pants. Make this ensemble in a great batik, linen, or double georgette.
Pattern 1885 has a dress, tunic, pants and oversized jacket. The slightly A-line dress and tunic have short sleeves and a unique neckline with a V-shape cutout. The pants have darts, a faced waistline, and a side zipper. The large pockets and a stand-up collar give character to the oversized jacket.

Pattern 1883 offers a nice spring ensemble, but the jacket does not fit the model -- it gapes on the upper chest and shoulder, despite a pose evidently intended to fill it out (note her arched back). What causes this, how can an individual determine whether the jacket would fit properly in this area (before cutting the fabric), and what pattern alternation would correct this problem?

I agree with you. I think if you measure from shoulder to waist (button) across the body and compare it to the pattern, you would have to make a small horizontal dart on the pattern to match your measurement. Also, it needs to have stay tape inserted on the edge to keep it from stretching.
I have to agree with CassandraM and add that the jackets in the other two patterns look boxy and oversized and not very dressy. I'd cut the 80s-style jacket in pattern 1885 quite a bit smaller and with more fitted sleeves to make it look good on me with the beautiful 60s dress.
In 1957 I had a jacket like 1885--They were the FAD and everybody had to have one! Made of corduroy, mine was turquoise color. Red was also popular. Thanks Simplicity for the trip down memory lane.
