Project Runway All Stars Season 4, Episode 1: “Made in Manhattan”

(From left) Host Alyssa Milano, mentor Zanna Roberts Rassi, and judges Isaac Mizrahi and Georgina Chapman are back for another season of All Stars.

Project Runway All Stars is back again, this time with designers from seasons 4, 7, 10, 11, and 12. To amp up the competition, two past winners, Dmitry Sholokhov (season 10) and Michelle Lesniak Franklin (season 11), have returned for a second chance at winning the grand prize. Alyssa Milano is also reviving her role as host alongside recurring judges Isaac Mizrahi and Georgina Chapman as well as mentor Zanna Roberts Rassi.

Before the designers could even settle in, they were greeted by Alyssa Milano at Grand Central Terminal with their first challenge. The group of 14 designers was split into two equal groups of boys vs. girls. The girls’ challenge was to make garments inspired by the uptown scene in New York City while the boys had to design for the downtown woman. Each designer was responsible for his/her own look and would be judged individually. The teams were given $1500 and one day to complete this challenge.

Businesswoman and fashion designer Ivanka Trump guest judged this week. Fabio Costa, Chris March, and Benjamin Mach had the highest scores, making the boys’ team the overall winner. Fabio’s look was edgy and modern; Chris’ look had a nice juxtaposition with his light top and heavy bottom; and Benjamin’s look was very creative and well made. Kate Pankoke, Patricia Michaels, and Michelle Lesniak Franklin, on the other hand, were in the bottom. Michelle’s dress was spoiled by her fabric choice. Kate’s dress didn’t fit with the theme, was too tight, and incorporated too many ideas. Finally, Patricia’s dress had ill-fitting bust darts, was the wrong color, and ended at a strange length. In the end, Patricia was eliminated while Fabio was the winner and will have his look worn by Ivanka.

It’s always exciting to see the designers back for a second (or third) round of Project Runway. Right off the bat, I was very impressed with Fabio’s design and think he has a lot of potential. While this looks like a great cast, I’m especially happy to see Dmitry, Chris, and Kate back for another attempt at fashion week.

Which designers are you most excited to see back on the runway? Did you like Fabio’s jumpsuit the best? Do you think the previous winners will make it to the end once again? Please share your thoughts below!
