Sewing With Saris

Threads magazine - 190 - April/May 2017 Issue

Sari fabrics are some of the most beautiful textiles in the world. These iconic fabrics have been hand-woven in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia for centuries. With their vibrant colors, alluring motifs, and luscious hand, sari fabrics can be difficult to resist. While it is important to be aware that wearing a sari may be considered controversial if you are not of South Asian or Southeast Asian descent, sari fabric may be used to create other garments, on its own or combined with non-sari fabrics, with wonderful results. In this article from Threads #190 (April/May 2017), you’ll find design considerations for making the most of a sari’s limited and often unique material. Recycled saris present an opportunity to use your design skills and imagination. With a little planning, you can create spectacular clothing, giving these magnificent fabrics a chance to live out another adventure.
