Threads magazine - 190 - April/May 2017 Issue

A key element of the lovely draped dresses shown on the popular PBS TV series Downton Abbey from the decades surrounding the turn of the century are unfettered panels of gossamer fabric that hint at the figure beneath. Designers back to the ancient Greeks have used this same technique to fool the eye and create figure-shaping illusions. You can do the same. With basic pattern understanding and a few simple proportion rules, you can invent flattering fashions for yourself using the principle of layered panels. Read this article from Threads #190 (April/May 2017) to find out how you can design custom garments with panels that flatter and fit your body.
