Halloween Costume Contest

Yip Yip from Sesame Street

After seeing a video on YouTube of the Yip Yips from Sesame Street, my son decided that this is what he wanted to be for Halloween this year.  The trick was to make the costume so that the mouth would move, allowing him to “yip, yip, yip, yip” while he went trick-or-treating.  The costume ended up being mostly hand-sewn.  It is basically a tube of fabric, open on both ends.  I hand tacked it to an old t-shirt to keep it from falling off of his head.  I then secured the top of it to an old winter hat to keep the face and mouth in place.  I made a casing around the mouth opening to insert boning to give the mouth a rigid, yet flexible shape.  Then, I hand gathered and stitched the black mesh fabric for the mouth, which doubled as his candy bag.  This costume is so much more fun to look at when it is in action because my son used his hands on the inside to grip the bottom edge of the mouth and make it move up and down as he said “yip, yip, yip”.  You can’t help but laugh when you see it!
