What’s on Your Sewing Wish List?

‘Tis the season for sewers to have visions of fabrics, patterns and notions dance in their heads. Here are some of the items that topped our wish lists this year. Tell us what’s on your sewing wish list this holiday season.

Judith Neukam, Senior Technical Editor

Bifurcated Dress Form

Nothing beats having a custom-made dress form, and I want one with legs. Wolf makes custom forms in every size and shape under the sun. You just send them your measurements.

(WolfForms.com; prices start at $675)

Threads Archive DVD

The Threads Magazine Archive DVD is the go-to source for everything Threads. It features a searchable database of every issue published—Nos. 1 through 146. I need one for home and office so that long-lost article is never more than a click away.  ($150)

Sewing Cruise
I have always wanted to go on a sewing vacation, and several cruise lines offer special packages for sewers and quilters. On the Stitchin’ Heaven Quilt Cruise, you can attend classes, have plenty of free time to sew, plus enjoy all the usual benefits of a typical cruise—great food, lots of recreational activities, and exotic port stops.(StitchinHeaven.com; prices vary according to package)

Removable Marking Pencil

I’m always looking for a better marker. The Fons & Porter mechanical marking pencil makes a fine, accurate line that’s completely removable. (FonsAndPorter.com; $13)

ASDP Master Certification Program
I’d love to go through the Master Certification program that was recently launched through the Association of Sewing and Design Professionals (ASDP, formerly PACC). The program is designed to encourage, inspire, and certify sewing professionals. (PACCProfessionals.org; prices start at $313)

Spin Dryer

I need a centrifuge for felting, drying, and speeding up the prewash process. The Spin Dryer is a compact, lightweight unit that does all of the above. It’s typically used as a supplement to a standard tumble dryer.
(Laundry-Alternative.com; $135)

Nicole Smith, Associate Editor

Patternmaking Workshop
I want to amp up my skills by attending a Connie Crawford patternmaking workshop. Held all over the U.S., her classes offer invaluable insight on how to get a proper fit. (FashionPatterns.com; prices start at $625)

Ergonomic Chair
The right chair would be a huge back saver when I spend hours in front of a sewing machine. The aptly named “Perfect Sewing Chair” by Ergonomic Advantage is available in a number of sizes. It features independent back, seat, and height adjustments.  (ErgonomicAdvantage.com; prices start at $400)

UV Protectant Film

I store my fabric in a glass-front cabinet and would like to protect it from fading due to sunlight exposure. Energy Saving Window film blocks 98 percent of the sun’s UV rays.

(ImprovementsCatalog.com; 24×48-inch sheets—$20 each)

Norma Bucko, Staff Seamstress

Foldable Cutting Table
When a sewing room is tight, a foldable cutting table is a lifesaver. I like this Slim Jim table; it folds—and rolls—out of the way easily. (HakaSewingFurniture.com; prices vary)

I store my fabric in a glass-front cabinet and would like to protect it from fading due to sunlight exposure. Energy Saving Window film blocks 98 percent of the sun’s UV rays.

(ImprovementsCatalog.com; 24×48-inch sheets—$20 each)

Chest with Multisize Drawers

For all of the odds and ends around the sewing room, I want a chest with drawers of varying sizes. This Calligraphy Herbal Medicine Chest will help me keep my sewing room organized. (Accent-Furniture-Direct.com; $268)

April Mohr, Editorial Assistant

Pattern-drafting Software
I want Wild Ginger’s Pattern Master Boutique series pattern-drafting software. It’s a super way to get a great-fitting pattern. Just add your measurements, pick the garment, select the styles, and it prints out a pattern that fits! (WildGinger.com, prices range from $100-$200)

Steam Iron

I’m in the market for a new, heavy-duty  iron— particularly one that puts out generous amounts of steam. I’ve heard the Reliable Iron Maven Steam Generator can’t be beat. (SewingMachineOutlet.com; $400)

Cording Foot

Specialty feet take sewing machines up a notch. I’d like a Bernina cording foot; it will enable me to add texture and detail by sewing cord on wool and thick fabrics. (Bernina.com; $50)

    Hi there Ladies,

I can agree with many of the items on the "wishlists" of the Threads team...........but for me, living abroad and having to send away for most of my needs my wishlist is full of items that are easily bought.

So top of my wishlist would be a fabulous sewing/fabric/notions shop where I live..............no chance of that

We'll be hopping on a plane and I have a list of supplies to buy and bring back

Huge stash of machine and handsewing needles
Cording, open toe and circular foot for my Bernina sewing machine
An assortment of beautiful threads for my smocking
Mill Hill seed beads, sequins, bugle beads and swarovski teardrops for an evening dress I am making
A new pin cushion with sharpener
Time in a sewing machine shop to go over how to use my automatic needle threader on my machine........I've lost the knack!!
This all on top of items already ordered and waiting at my twinsisters house for me to pick up............My sack will be full of sewing goodies!!
Happy Christmas everyone. Thanks to Threads magazine and the team.................always something inspirational and new to try.

I want the Threads magazine archive so badly I can almost taste it! I just got my own sewing machine last Christmas and I want to expand my limited sewing skills. This is everything I need in one place!!

As long as I'm dreaming, I'd like from Santa:

1)A sewing room where I can leave my machine set up and my work in progress. It doesn't help productivity to spend an hour of set-up and knock-down time every time I need to replace a zipper, and, besides, being able to change positions and activity becomes more necessary for survival with each passing year

2)A "fitting buddy" I could conjure up on a moment's notice, preferably with exquisite flat drafting skills.

3)Better vision and a new knee. Actually, I have a new knee. What I'd really like is my old one back in pre-blowout condition. At least I already have 2nd best, an orthopedist very skilled at making chicken salad out of chicken sh.....

4)To heck with pattern-drafting software. What I'd really like is a magic box into which I can place my raw sketches and have a perfectly fitting pattern appear as if by magic. But I guess I wouldn't need my "conjurable" fitting buddy.

Actually, I've already been blessed with the only thing I could ever wish for. And that's the ability to love and enjoy life in whichever situation I find myself, the love of a wonderful husband and son, and the promise that each day I rise to greet, I am able to rise and greet!!!

AND a winning season for my beloved New Orleans Saints.

    Joyeaux Noel et Bon Annee!

I so would love elves that will clean and keep my sewing room tidy. I have tons of room. Sounds great? The more you have the more you use. I am not good at deadlines so things get into quite a mess sometimes, like now! I seem to remember a childrens story about a shoemaker who had elves that came and finished his work and cleaned up his workshop every night while he slept. Perfect! Merry Christmas.

More than anything, I'd like TIME. Since I work full-time, I just don't have the time and energy to devote to my sewing, quilting, needleworking, and weaving. I am so tired when I get home each night and must spend the weekends trying to keep my house in order, it's sad when my sewing machine or loom beckon and I have to ignore them. So, for those of you who are retired or non-working, please don't waste a second and cherish the time you have.

    Merry Christmas!

Well, I got my gift early.
I'm sewing with my Mom's Touch and Sew 646 thanks to Sue and Bud at the Singer service center in Syracuse. (I inherited it in 2001, but it wasn't working. I brought it home with me after visiting my Dad and Sis this year. )

I'd LOVE to have the Threads achive DVD's. I hope to get them after Christmas...with my Christmas money(hopefully).
After, that, I wish to have time to be able to get into my "stash" & sew some of the things that are in my head.
    Threads! as usual...you ROCK!!!

Always on my wish list are vintage trims, ribbons, bias tapes, and antique baby clothes to embellish and a glass front cabinet to store my collage and sewing supplies and treasures. I'm looking forward to the monthly antiques market to start up again next month. I love looking through the stalls for beautiful antique trims and ribbons. Plus, my niece is spending the summer in Paris. She'll be working on her Master's in architecture and shopping the Paris flea markets with my wish list is hand.
