Fancy Fabric Challenge

Fancy Fabric Silk Suit

Here is the finished suit.

The inspiration for this suit is the beautiful accordion pleated silk dupioni that I used for the collar and at the bottom of the skirt. I found a matching burmese silk and silk chiffon in a contrasting color that worked nicely with the original fabric. I wanted to use the pleated fabric for a dramatic collar that would echo the Edwardian era, while still appearing modern and fashionable. I used Vogue 8205 for the jacket and Simplicity 2475 for the skirt, and using a muslin I fitted the suit to me with some alterations. The jacket is fully lined, and both pieces are completed entirely with hong kong seams on the inside. The skirt is composed of chiffon layered over the burmese silk. One of the challenges that I had with this piece was trying to figure out how to hem the pleated fabric, so that it wouldn’t fray, and yet not crushing the pleats or ruining their appearance. I eventually figured out a method that worked, using fabric paint in a color that matched the chiffon. The skirt is composed of chiffon layered over the burmese silk.

Love the way you incorporated the Edwardian collar, sweetheart neckline and kept emphasis on shoulders (a la Balmainn). It keeps today's shoulder emphasis from becoming too severe, yet allows the shoulder width to emphasize the narrow waist. Bet it looks stunning on you.

I have been wanting to make myself a jacket with this type neckline. I love it! You were so smart to use a muslin for the fit. What a nice outfit. Congratulations!
