Check out the winners of the Duct Tape Prom Contest

Ray and Yancy, First Prize Winners

WINNERS ANNOUNCED
The results are in, and after a five-week online voting period generating more than 44,000 votes, Ray Banna, 18, from Chandler, Arizona, and Yancy Esquivel, 17, from Gilbert, Arizona, have stuck it out to win the 10th-annual Duck® brand duct tape Stuck at Prom® Scholarship Contest. Ray and Yancy beat out more 240 couples from 43 states and six Canadian provinces to be crowned this year’s Stuck at Prom winning couple.

WINNING ATTIRE
Their outfits were designed using 30 rolls of white, black, electric blue, chrome and green Duck® tape. Their winning outfits are showstoppers, featuring an intricate, original duct tape swirl pattern. Ray’s white tuxedo and electric blue vest are both accented with the signature black swirl, while Yancy’s dress is the perfect complement with a white halter corset top and pick-up bottom that’s adorned in the duct tape design and embellished with handmade beads. Completing the ensembles are one-of-a-kind accessories, including an electric blue bow tie, boutonniere and shoes for Ray, and Yancy’s matching purse, corsage, jewelry and hair extensions, all created out of duct tape, of course.

CONTEST REQUIREMENTS
Contestants were required to enter as a couple and attend their local prom wearing their duct tape wardrobe. Their complete attire and/or accessories had to be made from duct tape, and their outfits had to be original designs created exclusively by the couple. The students had to submit at least one high resolution color photograph for judging showing the couple together wearing their duct tape garments.

JUDGING CRITERIA/OVERALL AWARDS
In honor of the 10th Anniversary of the Contest, there were 10 prizes: one first place, one second place, one third place, and seven runners-up couples. The following criteria was used by the judges:
•Workmanship (30%)
•Originality (25%)
•Use of Color (15%)
•Accessories (10%)
•Quantity of Duct Tape Used (10%)
The 10 contest entries with the highest scores were posted online for public voting. Winners were determined solely by the numbers of votes received.

PRIZES
First Prize: Each individual in the winning couple as well as the host school received a cash prize of $3,000.
Second Prize:  Winners and the host school received $2,000.
Third Prize: Winners and the host school received $1,000.
Runner’s up (7): Each individual member of the runner’s up couples and their respective host schools received $500.

Congratulations to each of the winning couples. I can hardly believe these incredible designs were made from duct tape! I remember when duct tape only came in grey. Now it comes in so many cool colors, and Duct Tape has just announced a new line of tape in a variety of patterns! Next year’s contest should be even more amazing.

A few years ago, my daughter (who is now 10) made a colorful duct-tape wallet. Now that she gets a real allowance and has some purchasing power, she's been using her wallet regularly. Every time she takes it out of her purse, she receives a compliment from the salesperson--great motivation for future creativity! I've already pointed out to her that she can win some serious scholarship money with a duct-tape prom outfit!

That is sooo cool! I'd like to try, but i think the ductape would be heavy and rash inducing.

    Skymom,
Please be sure to keep us informed if she does enter the duct-tape contest one of these days. We'll definitely want to cover the contest! Was her wallet done in one of the colorful duct tapes? Now she can make a crazy one in leopard print (or one of the other new patterns).

I suspect the hardest part about entering a contest like the duct tape prom contest is to get the guy to buy into the idea. My husband (who I went to both my senior and junior proms with) would NEVER have allowed such a thing. Maybe guys today are more creative and willing--especially when there's a possible financial reward.

April, she used purple, orange, and green, which were gifts from some craft-crazy auntie, I think. But a couple of weeks ago she spied tie-dye duct tape at Michael's and begged to buy some. I encouraged her to wait a bit, since she's doing a lot of knitting and sewing right now, and I'm trying (probably failing) to raise her with some sense of proportion when it comes to pre-stashing materials and supplies. Until she has her own basement or attic or storage space, she can't accrue too much stuff! Or the Barbies and babies and American Girls will have to go.

I usually don't take the time to read what is posted on this website. However, I regret that I wasted my time reading about a context that is so ridiculous. More importantly, that Threads is posting such an activity.
I reluctantly re-subscribed to Thread magazine because it is becoming a "crafty" magazine. After reading about this context I regret more that I just reniewed my subscription.
