If I would have known that I was going to join and start posting I would have taken pictures of this project in progress. As it is, you’ll have to settle for a description! I had this skirt that I /think/ I got from my sister, but it was too small. I thought, “Oh, I’ll do something with it at some point.” I arrived at that point today!
I’m 5’8″, the skirt hit me about mid calf before I started my reconstruction. I cut the top of the skirt off right under the zipper (about 8 inches of lovely linen fabric that will be used as backings for some felted potholders I’m going to be making soon). I turned down the new top 1/4 inch, then another 1 1/2 inches to make a casing for elastic. I top-stitched the top of the new waist band, then sewed the bottom of the casing, leaving an opening to run the elastic through. Elastic in place, opening sewed up, I stitched in the ditch on both sides to hold the elastic firmly in place. There’s nothing more annoying that elastic that rolls!
That part completed I used a template for a pincushin from Better Homes & Gardens to make the embellishment, which is of wool felt. Using all six plies of DMC938 embroidery floss, I blanket stitched around the heart and used double French knots in the center of the flower to attach it to the skirt.
Voila! My new skirt is done!
