Gloves1

This is an explanation of the gloves I embroidered based on the article “Embroidering Gloves” by Rosella Paletti from the January 1994 issue (#50).

The first pair I embroidered is the black pair for my niece’s 19th birthday, December 1993.  Her last name is Katz and she had a cat, Pepper, hence the pun on Katz-cats.  She was, at the time, attending Smith College, 3,000ish miles from her home in northern California, hence the Golden Gate Bridge.

The second pair is the golden ones.  These were for my daughter’s birthday in August 1995, who was attending San Jose State University, California.  The Greek letters on the left hand are of the sorority’s name and the name of the chapter.  The owl is their symbol.  The state of California with San Jose highlighted is there, as well as our dog, Ginger.  The other glove has a portrait of Susan, the initials of her school, her name, and a rose, which appeared on her bat mitzvah invitation (Shoshana, her Jewish name, may be interpreted as meaning, rose).

The third pair, the white gloves, was for a Hanukah present for my newly married daughter-in-law in December 1996.  The finger nails on the left one are random designs, the bride and groom (bride actually has a tulle veil sewn onto the glove) are on either side of their wedding date.  Note the wedding band and engagement ring (a clear bead sewn on, detailed in the picture below) is on her ring finger.  The other glove has initials of various organizations to which she belonged.  USY – United Synagogue Youth (Conservative national youth group); LMU – Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles (from which she obtained a Masters’ Degree); three Hebrew letters, yud, mem, and lamed, signifying the first initials of her Jewish name (Yenta Malcah Lowe); METS, her undergraduate, sorority-like club at Whittier College in Los Angeles; and lastly, JML, her American name initials (Jennifer Melissa Lowe).   On the palm is a map of Utah with Salt Lake City highlighted (where she grew up) superimposed on a map of California with Los Angeles highlighted (where she currently lives).  The next symbol is a tent with Ramah (in Hebrew) on it.  This is the summer camp, where she and our son met.

As you can see the content became more complex with each interpretation.

Thank you for such a delightful, informative, and creative magazine.
