I would LOVE to have this book because I reference material all the time. I want to make my clothes fit, and have a nice finish. Sometimes (a lot of times when it comes to Burda), pattern directions are vague and so I need a better reference. So far I've seen from Threads great advice and skill building techniques, so this would be amazing.

I would love to get this guide!

  3. Wierman | | #3

I would love to have this reference guide as I'm teaching my daughter to sew. This would be ideal for her (and I) to refer to again and again! Thanks!

  4. cejohu | | #4

I would LOVE to have this book because I no longer live close to my mom where I can just run over to her house, and get her to help with my latest sewing project.

  5. bmkcpa | | #5

I would really like this book. I have sewed in past but I am wanting to get back into sewing. I know there must be new and improved techniques that will help me not only re-capture my hobby but improve my skills as well :)

  6. thill60 | | #6

This would be a FANTASTIC book to own. I am unemployed so don't have a lot of discretionary income to spend on books. I LOVE to sew and am constantly trying to improve my sewing and fitting skills and add to my repertoire of mastered techniques. I feel a "go to" reference book like this would be invaluable.

  7. Beezing | | #7

I buy the update cd each year and peruse the magazine at our local library. However this doesn"t look like I support Threads which I do enjoy. Perhaps there is a way.

  8. goldnfox | | #8

I would love the chance to have this book. I have 2 girls in college that are fashion majors and I know they would love to learn from this great book.

  9. VickiKate | | #9

This looks like a wonderful book and is already in my Wish List! I love the magazine and all the techniques I've learnt from there so to have a single point of reference would be amazing.

  10. JoyK | | #10

I love all things "Threads". I have all the Threads Magazines and refer to them often. I would love to have this book to add to my collection.

I have sewn since I was in my 7th grade home ec. class. I liked being able to create and sew my own and my sisters' clothes. I took a tailoring class in high school, which really paid off later when we were "poor" and I used those tailoring skills to make a suit for my four-year-old son and used the scraps for his 3-year-old brother when they were in my youngest sister's wedding. They are grown, and I have recently retired (although I have gone back for another Master's degree), and would love to have an up-to-date reference for the sewing I have returned to. Thanks for this opportunity to win such a comprehensive book.

I could sure use a reference to tweak my current skills as well as allow me to expand those skills as well. I realized recently, I do not have a single sewing reference book that teaches basics or anything else sewing skill related for that matter. This would be a treasure in my personal library to say the least.

  16. NubianGoddess | | #16

I would love to have this book for two young girls that I have been teaching to sew. Both girls 8 and 11 hand sew and have been wanting to learn on a machine, the foot pedal for their Mum's machine was accidentally left behind when they moved to this province, so I have begun to show them the ropes of sewing.

Our first session consisted of sewing seams and we constructed a peasant-style top, perhaps a little ambitious on my part but the ladies enjoyed the experience, I did the finishing.
For our next session we are going to be constructing a simple panel bag with quilting on the face of the bag.

I think it would be great for these girls to have a reference for when we are not together sewing as they live in a rural town and I live in the city. It would be great to see and hear about how their imagination has spurred them to construct something really cool and that they had this great book as a cross-reference.

  17. texasmom3 | | #17

I am so far away from my mother that it is hard to ask questions about sewing projects all the time it is really nice to have a place to get answers.

  18. meemer | | #18

I've been sewing my own wedding dress and have had many questions throughout the process that have been difficult to find answers for. When I saw this book in the bookstore, I was beside myself. However, with my fiance unemployed for the last 6 months, I can't bring myself to pruchase it. To win it would be a godsend.

I would love to win this book! Pick me! Pick me! I am teaching my 26 yr. old daughter to sew and would love to "gift" this book to her. Of course, with the condition that she shares it with me! Thanks for producing such great reference and teaching materials.

  64. Restylrenegade | | #64

Having taken the apprentice rout to design, I'd like this book to show me more, show me more. I can create a garment from a sketch, down to pattern pieces, and production values, but satill i want to learn more, so I can teach more. At my age, I wish to share the wealth and help create the next generation of designers and sewers who want to evolve in our knowledge. At this point , I am the third generation, and have children who at the age of 10 were working on full bore commercial machines and draping masterpieces that pleasantly surprised, the two generation preceding her. Threads, just keep on being the inspiration and educators we all need .

  65. mamabee | | #65

I would love to have and use this book. Thanks for the opportunity!

I love my Threads magazine and am always learning new ways to do things. Since the weather is warming up, it's time to get back to garment sewing! Threads new book looks like a winner! I think the more you sew, the more you think you know, but there is always a different way to do it better. I would love to have this new book!

  68. jennieMB | | #68

I`m a beginner sewer but prefer to do needlework by hand so learning some couture-inspired techniques would be great.

  69. sewsewnerdy | | #69

The more I sew, the more I learn and the more I realize how much more I have to learn! Most of my advanced skills have been learned from Threads articles, but haven't get every issue, so it would wonderful to have a book that covers the key stuff.

  70. RitaKLivia | | #70

  74. grandniece | | #74

My great aunt Lillian costumed Albertina Rash's company, that until the advent of Agnes deMille (see her "Dance to the Piper" for details) provided the dancers for Broadway musicals. My great aunt did all this from New Bedford, Massachusetts, because she did not want to bring up her children in New York City. She also designed and produced the costumes for a company known as the Brockton Rockets when this local company was on the opening program of Radio City Music Hall; I believe they have been held over, only now they are known as the Rockettes. Whenever I went to visit this great aunt and appeared in an outfit she had not seen before she would examine it inside and out -- while I was still wearing it! -- to diiscover any sewing trick she did not already know. I am certain she would be just as eager to look into Threads Sewing Guide.

  75. user-1123541434 | | #75

I would love to have this book. I have learned so much from Threads and read each issue from cover to cover many times. I have much to learn and this book would be a magnificent asset to me.

  76. Kris_F | | #76

When I was a very young girl, my mother took a lot of time trying to teach me how to sew. I learned enough to mend my own clothes, buy off the rack and alter, and sew simple items.

I am ready to expand my growth to serging and complex alterations now. I NEED HELP. This is far more difficult than I first thought.

This year of sewing is all about the process of making the garment, learning the techniques and less about getting it done quickly. This book looks like it would fit well with my plan and teach me some forgotten techniques and practices.

  94. StitchLover | | #94

Oh my, how I could use this book! After several years of letting my sewing machine collect dust I have renewed my sewing interest. Now I find I'm really rusty in remembering all those little tips I practiced years ago when sewing for my four daughters. Just logging in to your site has helped renew my confidence so can't imagine how much improvement I would see by reading your book!

  95. LauraSews | | #95

Would be an awesome book to have for my 4-H kids! I teach sewing to about 15 4-H kids. They are an amazing bunch of talented kids.

  99. donnasdream | | #99

Wonderful, just what I needed. Some of my grandchildren want me to teach them to sew and my hairdresser wants me to teach a group of women how to sew, which I have never done. Now I'll have this.

Hmmm, maybe if I win this I will realize there is more to sewing than just quilting????

  101. marrvalus | | #101

Threads is THE best sewing magazine. I have the CD with the historical magazines and an annual subscriptions. I also like the recent designer's special edition magazine. There is no doubt this book will be a definite must for my library! Thanks for providing those who sew with a wonderful resource.

  102. SAAM | | #102

  106. Jenhen | | #106

I would love to have this book because I use my Threads Mags all the time for the great techniques and tips. They always have detailed pictures, which I find some other references are lacking. 111. seamster | | #111

Over the years, I have bought many books on sewing, alterations, etc. If I learn even one new thing from each book, I feel it's been worth the purchase. It would be nice to win the Threads Sewing Guide and exciting to find a new idea I could use in my sewing and alteration business.

  112. mmcgrat6 | | #112

On a whim, I bought a $15 machine at a local convenience store and found myself captivated ever since. That was about three months ago and I've come to love this hobby. I'd like to win this book to learn about things I haven't encountered yet or answers to questions I didn't know to ask as someone teaching himself. I've learned so much from this site and wanted to enter before diving back into my latest garment. Thx!

  113. lizingham | | #113

Have the commenters noticed - the book is now for sale, and there's a great preview of the beginning of the book! See here: http://www.tauntonstore.com/threads-sewing-guide-071294.html
If the first pages are anything to go on, including the table of contents, it's the sort of book that would save sewers a lot of time and head-scratching, and lead to much better finishes.

  114. SuzyQCanuck | | #114

Feed two of my addictions at the same time!!! What a twofer that would be. Not to mention the knowledge gained. Here's a thought for the "greenies" amongst us: Once a book is obtained, it requires no further resources to impart its benefits.

  115. sewgramms | | #115

One of the reasons I love to sew is that it helps me honor the memories of my grandmothers and great-grandmothers who sewed not just for fun but as a way to clothe their families while making ends meet. Since I've lost them both, I no longer have a teacher or mentor. I'd love to have this book so that I can continually improve and be able to pass the skill on to future generations as my grandmothers passed it to me.

I would love to have this book! I have very basic skills, but I am wanting to get into sewing my own clothes because I have a hard time finding clothes I like that fit in the stores. Everything seems to be geared to stick figures. Trust me, I am not a stick figure!

  119. learnergirl | | #119

You can never have enough sewing books! There's always something new to learn- an easier method, a tip for a more professional look, etc. I've been sewing for at least 60 years and there's always more to learn.

  120. VictoriaR | | #120

This looks like a great book. I'd love to have it.

  121. teachme2sew | | #121

I have recently developed an interest in sewing. I have started a project and I am working on it slowly. I would love to have this book as a reference source for future sewing projects. Thanks!

SO MANY TIMES IT IIS 2 AM AND I HAVE A QUESTION.
THIS SOUNDS LIKE THE PERFECT BOOK FOR THOSE TIMES WHEN ALL MY FRIENDS ARE SLEEPING.

  125. Merrilymarylee | | #125

I DO love to sew, but I'd love it even more if I could sew better. If you say this book is a must have, then I must have it!

  126. zaftig1 | | #126

This sounds like a "must have" book that needs to be in my library. I'll keep my fingers crossed but add it to my book list just in case my luck is out.

  127. StrawberryGirl | | #127

Oh, goodness, could I use this book! I am new to sewing and have so many questions. I'm learning to sew on my Grandma Arlene's Bernina 830 (the super awesome one from the 70's) that I inherited from her. She was such a wonderful seamstress - I hope to make her proud!

  128. NikkiK | | #128

I must have this book. I'm desperate -- the old Singer paperback just doesn't cut it anymore.

  129. anic | | #129

I love sewing but still a novice... I will certainly learn from this book..

  130. Zsuzso | | #130

Cannot afford the Threads Magazine DVD archive - please
    randomly choose me.

  138. dmbfshns | | #138

    Reason of needing this book:
I recently graduated with my Associates of Science: in Fashion Design(05/14/2011)and am now ready to start my true passion of designing and sewing clothes! I believe this book would help pursue my passion in sewing. It will also be like having my teachers right here to guide me with specific how to's, don'ts and sewing terminology. My last reason why I need this book is becuase I know that trial and error is very time consuming when it comes to sewing, don't get me wrong, this is another reason why I love to sew, it's all about solving problems and knowing that the problem you solve worked :) but, having this book would give me a good generalization of the how to's and definitions that I may have forgotten and will need to remember in my future sewing career and careers to come!!

  139. cactusflower44 | | #139

After years of not sewing, I have been slowly getting back into sewing for fun and to make my own clothing. I was self taught to begin with, so I need all the help I can get! I'd be thrilled to win this book so I can have a polished, professional look to my clothes! Thanks, cactusflower44.

I am kind of like the guitar player who doesn't know how to read music. I have been sewing for a long time, but I am going back to learn some of the basics that I missed a long the way. This book would be a great help!

  142. Sidhe612 | | #142

I'd love to receive this book since I've picked up sewing again, but more as a process than a destination. I think some of the couture and special techniques would be an enhancement to my projects.

  143. SewCindy | | #143

  145. twinsprites | | #145

My mother taught me to sew, When she passed away, so went her encyclopedic knowledge of and ability to answer any and all sewing queries I might have. This book could help answer all that I don't know.

My own daughter is wanting to learn sewing and the book could serve her in learning to sew!

  146. ladylacer | | #146

I did not know this book was even available. I would like to win one and put it in our Sewing Guild library so many could benifit from it.

  150. GrevilleaGal | | #150

Since finding out about your magazine a few years ago, I devour every issue as it comes. We here in Australia have nothing that is as informative and has helped my sewing to rise to a greater level of quality and style. This book would be a godsend to me as I can see it helping me a great deal. Would LOVE to have one.

When I start a new project, I like to have all my information in one place. This book would really help me.

  154. idofabric | | #154

Books like this remind me how much I forget! They are great to brush up on techniques, and to show others how to do something that comes easy to me, but is hard to explain. This would come in very handy while I teach my son and the girls next door how to sew this summer, all of them have a limited college break to learn in a lot in a little time.

  155. annagen | | #155

I would like this book because it is by the Editors of Threads magazine - my favorite!

  156. HeavenlyPrincess | | #156

I would love to have this book because I could get rid of the other inferior books on my shelves!

  157. sewsioux | | #157

What a amazing chance to win this book! I'll be giving it to my grandaughter who I have been trying to teach to sew. After spending one year at college, she is trying to upgrade her wardrobe to a more mature feeling. I only get to see her once in awhile on week-ends, so is difficult for me to show her a lot of details. This book will be great for her with all the instructions and pictures to guide her along. It will be difficult for me to give up I'm sure. Even though I've been sewing for several years, ther is a lot of new techiques out there. Hope I'm the lucky one!

I have "Threads" going back to the 70's. You have held my hand through maternity clothes, toddler rompers, and party dresses until my baby is pushing thirty. I appreciate the wonderful resource and inspiration that you have been. I have most of the books you have published, and all of them are fabulous. I would really like to see what you've done in a comprehensive guide. Hey, I might need it to sew my daughter's wedding dress, if the guy she's seeing gets with the program.

I'm teaching 5 of my granddaughters to sew and this would be a great asset to have. They need to learn the right way of doing things, and if it's in print right in front of them, they won't be as likely to question why things need to be done in a certain way to achieve the results you want.

I'm totally amazed at all the features on my new Bernina 830 and want to use them to make clothing that actually fits. It's amazingly hard to find people who will teach one to sew clothes so this book sounds like a great resource.
I'm a subscriber to the Threads magazine and really enjoy the articles and detail instructions that even a novice like me can follow' so I'm sure this book would give the information I need to tackle some of the more detailed projects I want to do. Thanks for this opportunity.

  206. fergus4 | | #206

Things have really changed in the 30 yrs I was away from sewing with other demands on my life. Thrilled to have time now to jump back in, I find that fabrics, notions, techniques (and let's not forget machines) have all changed! I enjoy Threads Magazine and know that I will catch up very quickly with my own copy of the Threads Sewing Guide.

I participate in American Sewing Guild and sew for myself and family. Machine embroidery fascinates me, I am anxious to learn quilting and I would like to make drapes and pillows for the house. Your guide will be such a big help as I move along in these areas and more.

    Thank you for this opportunity.

  207. TaraRR | | #207

I'm brand new to sewing. This book looks like it would be exceedingly helpful for a beginner.

  208. Gypsy5k | | #208

A few years ago, I was injured on the job. A few months after that happened I wasn't feeling well. To make a long story short, I was diagnosed with 9 different illnesses to go along with my injury. Woo Hoo! I hit the jackpot. I couldn't do my hobbies anymore. I used to sew when my children were small but I hadn't sewn since then. I went out and bought myself a top of the line Babylock sewing machine and serger. There are so many new,and exciting tools and techniques and I am having some problems remembering how to do some of the simplest stitches. I would really love to win this book, it would save me precious time if I didn't have to search the Internet for instructions on how to do a certain stitch. Plus, I am the type of person that needs to keep going over the instructions while I am working on a project. I don't always have access to the laptop when I am sewing. Having the book would allow me to sew whenever I wanted to,not just when I have access to the pc.

  209. sewquilter | | #209

I would love to have this book. I always need help in sewing garments. I need to have specific instructions sewing garments and other items. I could use the extra tips and hints that are in this book. I have always learned something new in every book I receive. I am beginning to learn to sew with a basic machine...after my Mom passed away after decades of sewing, I always meant to learn more than the basics from her and I have missed my chance. Instead of looking through back issues of Threads (and a couple of other magazines) while mumbling various versions of "I know I saw an article on that...." or searching the internet for technique or inspiration I would at least have a jumping of point with "Threads Sewing Guide." It would also be something to pass on to my granddaughter when she's ready to 'graduate' from her beginning sewing books.

  241. Caryl61 | | #241

I would consider it a privilege to win this book and add it to my library. Ever since I was a little girl, I loved fabric, buttons, color, texture, but mostly the possibilities of what I could create with my imagination, a pair of scissors, thread, and hours in front of my Mothers sewing machine. Now at home with my own machine, I love taking the time to close out everyday distractions and create... be it a new project, putting the finishing touches on a gift for a loved one, a new baby, something for our home or even the gratification from hemming a pair of slacks. Creating beautiful things both, for others and to surround yourself with makes our lives richer, fuller and connects us to other people in deeper and more authentic ways. Creating beloved and beautiful items for others allows people to see who we are... as people, as artists and as fellow human beings.
Having this volume in my library to inspire me to recognize beauty and translate that into new pieces would be amazing! Thank you!

I'd love to have it. I'm just starting to make garments, but already, friends of mine who would like to begin sewing are peppering me with questions. I also have a small but very wiggly son, and I'd like to learn how to make garments that can survive him.

  257. peej2 | | #257

I buy sewing guides when I see one that looks like it will give me even more insight.
The best part is looking at the older ones and marveling at the projects and style changes.
I have the "Reader's Digest Complete Guide to Sewing" copyright 1976. There is a project for a skirt/cape beach coverup. My friends and I were laughing over how the times have changed. It's an elastic-waisted gathered skirt, then, pull it up to the neck for the coverup. No sleeves or arm holes. The photo reminds me of a person wearing a cabana!
I do wonder if anyone made it.

I taught myself to sew and embroider when a child, making clothes for my Barbie, and then as a teen, clothes for myself. Sewing is both a practical and a creative art, also very relaxing and inspirational, and I've missed engaging in this activity for many years. Now that I'm retired and I've recently become more involved with sewing and other crafts,I'd like to update and improve my skills. This book looks like the ideal vehicle to achieve this.

"Seamstress" used to be the way I described myself, and I always had several projects going on. But then things happened--a too-demanding job, family and health issues, etc., and I got away from sewing. I still went to fabric stores whenever I could, still subscribed to Threads, still had fantasies about projects I'd like to do, if I ever had the time. Well, that time is NOW, and I need a boost to help me get back on track and bring me up-to-date on the latest techniques and products. This book would be just the ticket, and I'd be thrilled to get it!

I always loved to sew since I was 8 years old. Once I was married, raised kids, worked a full time job, there was no time for what I wanted to do as my craft of sewing. Now that the kids are grown and on their own, I have to reteach all that I lost through the years of raising a family. This book would have the knowledge I am lacking to reteach me the art of sewing that I had to put aside to raise a family. Please send me this book as my guiding light, my bible, to be able to teach myself this beautiful art of sewing. With your book, I can now have the time to make items for my home and especially for my grand children. Thank you!

THREADS is my trusted source for both sewing advice and inspiration. THREADS SEWING GUIDE is going to be my one reference book for finding all the latest how-to's and tips for creating gorgeous clothes with professional fit and current flair. No more putting off projects, or putting them away half-finished, because I can't find instructions for a technique I need. Good-bye, frustration. Hello, sewing fun!

  308. sandrambrown | | #308

OMG! I could not believe it when I saw this offer. My first "sewing" experience was tracing the bodies of paper dolls onto paper and designing clothes from the Sears catalog onto the drawings, along with tabs of course. Next, I graduated to hand sewing clothes for baby dolls. During junior high school, I learned to use a sewing machine and made a garment for myself. I was so proud of it. I wish that I had kept it, but I wore it out.

During those years, I came across the Vogue Sewing Book. For the longest time, that was my sewing bible. Then, I discovered Threads magazine. I could not believe it. I had found the mother lode of sewing information. Now, to have an opportunity to win a copy of Threads Sewing Guide would be the pinnacle. I know that it will contain everything that the novice and the experienced sewer need to know. I guess it goes without saying that I would love to have a copy. I am trying to pass along my sewing skills to the next generation. They don't have the benefit of sewing classes and, I think, it is important for those of us who know something about it to pass along the techniques and the love for manipulating fabric.

Threads is #1 on the leader board when it comes to sewing! Since I am time-challenged (as are most sewers I know), I often seek help at odd hours of the night (not too many people distract me then), so having this reference book would be a great way to keep me moving forward! Thanks for the opportunity to win this one!

Because of the current economy, I have had to go from an advanced beginner to a professional sewer. I am doing alterations. I read and study everything I can, including Threads magazine and their wonderful website. I buy individual issues as I am about to move. Then I will subscribe. I hope you will consider me for the winner of the book.

  356. 3feathers | | #356

This book would be a wonderful addition to my Threads collection of reference books. I started collecting them a few years ago and find them timeless! Somethings just aren't time sensitive..sewing is one of them. I love reading the articles on clothing construction and pattern alterations. This book would be great to add to the collection!

  357. Neosha | | #357

My two loves are books and sewing. I am a librarian so I really appreciate the value of books in helping us to learn and to expand our creative abilities. I love sewing--anything! Making polishing cloths for my husband out of old t-shirts, creating Elizabethan gowns, giving away over 80 aprons I've made, sewing my own clothes. I learn new things and need refresher insturctions constantly. I bought my first sewing machine in summer 1968--a Singer Stylist. My first sewing book was a Talbot book from my mother. Another wonderful book would be great.

This would be an amazing reference to have at hand! No matter how experienced a sewer is, there is always something new cropping up that needs an answer or guidance. The only reference guide that I have is very old, probably from the mid-70's, and many things have changed since then - new fabrics, notions, methods, etc.

  361. alfanhui14 | | #361

I will love to win this!!

  362. costumeladies | | #362

A friend and I have taken over the care of the costume room for live theater in our town. We create and maintain clothes that reflect the styles back to the 1840s approximately. We are also creating a reference library of books and movies so we can improve our sewing abilities and be able to create items as realistic to their time as possible. We have several seamstresses who willingly sew items from corsets and bustles to ladies travelling costumes and all the small accessories that go with them, and because this is a community playhouse all members are volunteer. I find that every time we search through one of our books, there is a tip or technique that will help us in our work. Considering the tips and ideas I have learned from your website this year with my new subscription, I think this book would be a great addition to our library.

I would really love to have this book to improve my skills. When my Mom passed away last year May 20th, I inherited Mom's sewing machines and all unfinished projects. I want to complete these projects and present them to the Great-Grands and Grandchildren as Christmas gifts this year. I know the Sewing Guide would be a wonderful help to me and a blessing to our family this holiday season in memory of our Loving Mother. Thank you in advance.

  368. msewwhat | | #368

I purchased the magazine, "Teach Yourself to Sew" and then actually won the DVD set. Since I then had two copies of the magazine I shared one with my dentist. She called it the "Betty Crocker of sewing books." I have to agree the magazine is for anyone who sews. It offers new and basic techniques for the beginner and new and refresher techniques for the more experienced sewer.

I would love to have a copy of the book, "Threads Sewing Guide," to add to my collection. It would never collect dust because I use my reference materials on a daily basis.
Thank you Threads, for all of your inspirational ideas and tips!

I started sewing 45 years ago. it is part of my soul. In the latest years I have had little time due to an elderly parent. I think the book would get some of the cobwebs off my skills and teach me the new ones. I still get many requests for help and support from new sewers. I really enjoy charity sews when I hear of them. Project Linus is a favorite. Please pick me for the book. I love reading Threads.

I have been sewing for years but it is a constant learning experience. Everything you read or see is another view that could possibly be an improvement on what you presently know. I also have 4 adult daughters, 3 are eager to learn and I have shown them basic stuff. This book would allow us all to expand our horizons. My mother showed me(in the 40's) and I have come a long way but there is still a lot to learn.

For many years I had little time to sew. About 2 years ago I found one of the "Threads" Magazine in a second hand store and have been hooked ever since. When I discovered Threads was online I immediately subscribed. Everyday, I check my email to see if I have a new e-letter from Threads. I love these articles and have found they have helped me tremdously in many ways. I especially love the vintage articles and designs and how toos'. For the past 3 years I have been caring for my Mom who is doing a battle with cancer. When I began to take care of her in my home I didn't get to far away from home so was able to pick up my love of sewing again. My love of sewing came from my Mom and she taught me when I was a child. Everytime a new Threads is on the rack I rush out to get it and share it with her. She loves it and would have loved to have it when she was sewing for 7 children! I would be thrilled to own this book and share it with her before she dies and I would put it to good use!!!

  386. morning | | #386

Who needs a reference book? We all do and this one looks superior especially for all us rusty sewers who've spent the last thirty years working and raising children and can't remember how to make all those totally incredible clothes quilts and disasters that we used to churn out with our eyes closed (did we really wear some of those styles?????). And by the way, when did sewing machine needles get so small and blurry. Ya, so I count myself in big time as a perfect candidate for this book because presently when I sew it is as if I have 10 thumbs (none of them opposable) and I could really use a comprehensive guide to pull me out of my darkages and into the light of creativity. Good luck to us all - including me................

Life has been busy going to college, working and raising a family over the years but I am at a point now that I have time to do the things I love more often.

One of those things is sewing and designing my own clothing. This book would greatly help me renew my skills and provide a great reference for a very long time.

I recently just picked up sewing again, I have the talent to be a good seamstress but I need the proper guidance and knowledge of correct sewing techniques that could lead me to that direction, sewing to me is a great hobby I would love to master. When I start a sewing project, I encounter stubling blocks that keep me away from being a good seamstress and continuing the project at hand, such as pattern sizing, fabrics, finishing seams, tips and techniques that would make my life as a seamstress so much easier having the knowledge of the tricks of the trade at my fingertips. I would need to tailor clothes to my liking and learn all aspects of being a professional wanna be seamstress. This would be a great beginning having these skills, tips, techniques at hand when I need them for reference. Eliminating these stubling blocks would help me tremendously.

Several ladies in the far north of New Caledonia, who have not had the opportunity of learning, have asked me to teach them how to sew. One had never seen a garment under construction or a pattern instruction sheet before and had so many questions.

The book would be a great reference resource to use when teaching the ladies the beginning steps of sewing and developing their ability from there. The book would make teaching easier... as I still have much to learn!

I SO need this book. I am pretty much self taught. I use Thread magazine as my go to pretty much for everything. I now find myself teaching/helping newer sewers! So I have gotten back into myself--newly retired and have the time to really delve into it.
    As I said--I SO need this book:o)

So many Threads articles, tips and hints guided me through creating my daughter's wedding gown last summer. That project, and the skills I gleaned from Threads has taken my self-taught sewing skills to a new level. Sometimes it takes a little longer to do it "right", but the pride that I take in creating things more professionally constructed and finished is worth every minute. I can't wait to take on new projects, and would appreciate a reference from a publication that has already proven it's worth.

As you mentioned, this book seems really a must have. We could have a good idea of this book with the google preview and it is one of the book I thought to get. Images and text seems to give the good information for a beginner or could be a quick reference for anybody else.

I live in a very small apartment, so I try to make sure that every tool and reference I have serves multiple purposes. I own only a handful of sewing books, and this is one I have had my eye on for quite a while to add to the collection. I literally read my sewing books straight through, like novels; I would love to have this one to explore!

If this book is anything like Threads magazine, it would be well worth giving it space on my sewing shelf!

I am getting back into sewing after many years of not doing any sewing at all. This book would bring me up to date and I could take advantage of all the new techniques, fabrics, and items to help me make nicely finished clothing. Thanks, Taunton for publishing this book.

I have two vintage kenmores, two sewing books and a subscription to Threads. The magazine taught me to hammer down thick seams to sew multiple thicknesses more easily. It was worth the price of the issue;maybe worth the entire year's subscription. the book would be a great reference.

I would love to have a copy of this book, I am just getting back into sewing. I used to sew all of my clothes and I am looking forward to sewing again. I have forgot quite a bit but once I started sewing again it does come back, So the sewing guide would come in handy. I had forgotten how much I loved to sew! Beside Threads magazine I really dont have any other reference guides for sewing. Just the internet. So it would be great to own a copy.

  473. Zoeyskeeper | | #473

As with each person, my heart beat quickened at the thought of winning an awesome book. My first thought was, "Wow, that would be a great source of information!"

My best sewing ideas and solutions come to me in my dreams. I sew daily and normally have several projects going simultaneously. Sewing is always on my mind. It is the challenge to create new and unique things that brings satisfaction and joy as each project comes together and is completed.

Like a kid on Christmas morning, someone will be jumping for joy soon. They will drop everything they are doing in order to sit down and at least glance through their new book, until they have more time to absorb and implement each page of information.

The little wheels in their mind will be spinning because of the dozens of ideas pouring into their imagination.

Like every contestant who enters, the little voice inside my head is yelling, "Hey, here I am over here. Pick me!"

Thank you Threads, for the opportunity to win an exceptional reference book. If it is compiled and written by Threads, it has to be the best.

  474. annl001 | | #474

I would sooo love to add this great resource to my library, especially with the Threads endorsement. As a self taught sewer there is always something I'm unsure of and like to reference. I have sewn for many years and after very recently sewing my daughter's wedding gown, she expressed an interest in learning to sew (yay!). She is very creative (designed her wedding gown herself) and so I gave her my old trusty sewing machine after I bought my new one a week ago. I would have loved to teach her to sew myself, but she has moved quite far away after her wedding earlier this year and we have to find another way for her to learn. I love Threads magazine and have learnt so much from its pages and I know with the Threads Sewing Guide my daughter will be able to learn even more than I would've been able to teach her. (Would love to have the book myself, but my daughter needs it more that I do).

  476. brackloney | | #476

I love to use sewing techniques from the professionals, when I sew for myself and my two grown up daughters. My old sewing instruction book (not from threads) is useful, but it doesn't quite reach those standards. I find myself taking time to trawl the Internet (mainly the Threads site!) for advice, and how much nicer it would be to have that expertise in a handy book on my sewing table.

  477. TimelessCreations | | #477

I really need a good reference book like this. It would reduce the limited space I have for reference book since everything would be in one good book.
I lost a husband and daughter nine weeks apart. Iam unable to get any financial income from his death. I am a retired teacher of Home Economics and must live on my retirement income and support myself and my family.I have Degenerative Joint Problems and cannot walk or stand for long periods. So I had to stop working. I have already had several joint replacements.
To help support the family I do alterations, machine embroidery and some crafts for a small fee and often free. I create clothes for the less fortunate students in my community and donate them to students.Ex.Formal, Cheerleader items,Throws, etc. The economy has left some families unable to allow their child to attend the prom or be in extra curricular activities.Fabric is often donated by others in the community to help those in need. I provide the skills.
A reference like this would enhance my skills tremendously and it would all be under one cover. This book would be an added blessing to my work.

Learned to sew many years ago from a very gifted seamstress, but over the years time and life has prevented me from sewing as much as I would like to. Recently became disabled due to many different things and have found I would like to return to sewing as a way to keep myself from becoming further withdrawn and also to enjoy all the wonderful things that come from creating something beautiful. I also have recently come to live with my daughter who for the first time is showing an interest in learning to sew for herself and feel this would be an awesome learning tool for her as well as something to re-orient me to the updated world of sewing. This appears to be a wonderful guide and I would LOVE to have it.

Threads is my sewing backbone! I have sewn since childhood, but in the 1990s I was looking for a good sewing magazine to bring me up to date. Next to me a lady said, “If you want the best in sewing help, Threads is your only choice.” So started my confidence that you would not let me down in learning couture sewing – and you are there! Our children have their own families now and so I recently graduated from fashion design school and started a Women’s Business Suit Design business. My mom used to sew most of her and my clothes, knit sweaters for family and friends, and create embellishments with tatting and embroidery. She was famous in the local community for her knitting skills. Whenever she asked me to learn to sew or knit, I made an excuse. She told me every girl must know how to sew and convinced me to learn the basics and I made a few clothes for my dolls with her help. When I started working and wanted to buy nice clothes for work, they were expensive, I always wished I could make my own skirts, tops, and jackets but I HADN'T LISTENED TO MY MOM at the right time. She had passed away by then and I started learning through internet.

I would love to have this book because I need to learn the various techniques to sew and finish my clothes nicely.I use internet because it is a great resource and free and I can't afford to buy books.Patterns have to be adjusted at times to fit well and that adds uncertainity and lack of enthusiasm to a project.I have some unfinished projects for which I started off with a store bought pattern and then got stuck at some point for unclear instructions and then put the project away in a bag to finish some other time and those times never come...ha ha. This THREADS book for reference will be amazing!

I started to learn sewing before I can even remember, and have had no formal training. My mom is a wonderful 'by the pattern' seamstress and made many of my clothes when I was young. Not only am I short (4'11"), but I am full busted, so most patterns won't work without considerable adjustments, and I find myself ignoring patterns and create as I go, learning to drape on my own. I am also disabled, so create clothing and accessories that work with my special needs, and I enjoy creating truely unique items.
This book would be a great addition to my library so that I can learn some of the tricks of the trade, thereby allowing me to cut down on trial and error to be more productive.

It's so nice to have a go-to book to find out all the answers to the questions one has about sewing. What's not to like! This book looks wonderful, and I love books that I can refer to knowing that I would most likely find the answers I am looking for in them. I am a book person as I live so far from areas which have access to sewing teachers and people who I would have access to for answers. My closest Sewing Store or Book store is 2 hrs away in all directions. I received the 2009 DVD of Threads Magazine from my husband for Christmas as he knows I read the magazine from cover to cover when I get it and save it. Although I sew occassionally over the years with retirement coming it would be nice to have a book to update my skills. Sewing blankets and a GD dress.

I am constantly looking for new and updated information, guidance and ideas. This book would be a perfit to my growing library.

Having a book like this one is another way not only to enhance my sewing but to have something of value to give to my grandchildren when the time comes and I am not able to help them personally.

This book has been on my 'must-have' list since I saw it in Threads Magazine. It looks perfect for me as it covers everything from picking a pattern to fit-and-finish. My daughter and I would enjoy sharing this book as we work our summer sewing magic creating new fashions for fall!

IF this book can help me put a collar on a shirt and have it look professional.. I want it! Nay! I NEED it! Collars are my bane.

  551. Suzannedenisearnold | | #551

I would really benefit from the use of this book. Money is tight and my time is everything! I love your magazine and currently by it off the stand. Trying to teach yourself to sew is not working out for me so please select me!!!

  552. annie410 | | #552

I taught myself to sew in high school. I am now 48 years old, an "almost" empty nester, and am getting back into sewing after an absence of almost 15 years. I need all the help I can get to bring my skills up to speed. While I do own a sewing book, Vogue Sewing purchased in 1982, it is worn out. And it does not have any of the new techniques taught in Threads magazine which I love so much. If I need to relearn something, I want to relearn it the modern way, not the way it used to be! I may be middle-aged, but I'm no dinosaur! A nice new sewing book demonstrating the most up-to-date techniques in a clear and concise manner is just the thing I need.

I used to sew when I was younger (everything from tops to jeans) but haven't for a long time (30 years) so I am back to it with a new sewing machine and need to relearn a lot. I especially need tutorials. I hope Thread Magazine will help. I just subscribed.

I thought I was through sewing years ago, I learned to sew as a child, now as a middle aged adult I'm finding myself having to help my daughter and son with sewing projects. I never expected to be sewing again. So far we have done projects from costumes to Bridal, and back to outdoor furniture covers.
This would be a great boost to help.

I would really like get this book especially when i need to see a step done in my sewing projects ,which i have not done already. I don't have the luxury of having my mom around if i run into a problem and my wife is limited when it comes to sewing. My wife usually comes to me if she has any sewing needs or questions.

  556. mcedler | | #556

I am always inspired by Threads magazine and I am always a student learning new ways to perfect techniques as fabric, tools and equipment change. I would love to add this book to my sewing library as a reference when I need expert advice on a project.

Im looking forward to receiving my 1st magazine from Threads. The Threads Sewing Guide would be perfect for everyone who sews and especially for someone who has been away from sewing for quite some time. I believe it would bring them up-to-date on the latest techniques and would also serve as a great refresher course. I know I sure can use this book, I haven’t sewn since 1999 and I’m afraid to get started. I’ve just signed up with Threads – I need to take that first step & get over the fear & get back into the swing of things. I hope I win this book, I sure can use it!

i am now learning to sew and this book will give me great tips about doing it professionally

  562. Sewannie | | #562

I have subscribed to Threads Magazine off and on for a number of years. After leafing through this book at an ASG meeting it has been placed on my wish list. Hope I win.

  563. SerenityWoods | | #563

I assume since some of the comments are from November that this will be given away in May of 2012???? Or was it last year??? I'm SO confused.

I do sewing for others out of my home. Mainly mending and this book would help in so very many ways. I receive all types of items to mend from Back packs, men's pants and even a torn Teddy Bear. So any helpful item is received with great glee!

I just hope it is May of 2012 and I'm not too late!

I cannot believe this wonderful book is up to win. It is wonderful to have a chance to win it.

The references in it are so exciting it gives me chills, as I love Threads and all I have learned so far in just the few months I found it.

The book will be excellent for anyone who wins, good luck to us all. But, hope I win!

  565. sandydward | | #565

If, and I repeat if, I were lucky enough to win, I would be in 7th heaven. I recently was disabled and had to quit nursing, But I thought about how much my elderly residents loved getting the lap covers and various other items sewn for them at Christmas time. So now that I have time and a little knowledge, I'm sure I can create some fun and useful items for their gifts Thanks to you all and Good Luck.....

    Sandy
