American Sewing Guild Members Converge on L.A. in August

The American Sewing Guild’s (ASG) annual conference will be held in Los Angeles this year, Thursday through Monday Aug. 18-22, at The Westin Bonaventure hotel. You still have plenty of time to sign up to attend, and judging by the sewing experts, educational sessions, and tours that are lined up, this year’s conference is one to put on your calendar now. Non-ASG members are welcome to attend, as well.

Click here to view a PDF of the conference brochure. Topics range from garment fitting, creative uses for buttons, purse construction, perfecting rolled hems, and fashion illustration to home crafts, creating art fabric, dyeing, new construction techniques, and creative embellishments. The program offers workshops, seminars, and lectures in two-day, full-day, half-day, two-hour, and 90-minute formats to suit a variety of skill levels and sewing interests.

Among the many events scheduled are the keynote address by Margaret Jankowski, founder of The Sewing Machine Project; the conference fashion shows and the Creativity Contest; and the Fall/Winter 2011-2012 fashion forecast, delivered by fashion design and pattern-making expert Connie Crawford.

Several special exhibits will be on display in the vendor exhibit hall: the Way to Womens’ Wellness Foundation’s Art Bra exhibit; the 2010 Treasures Collection of the Hoffman Challenge; a Bernina fashion show exhibit; and ASG Olympia, Wash., chapter member Gene Barker’s Vintage Corset Collection.

This year’s conference tours range throughout Los Angeles and include many of the city’s landmarks, but the Santa Barbara Lace & Textile Tour and the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising and Fabric Shopping Tour will likely be of greatest interest to sewing aficionados.

Take a look at the schedule of events, workshops, seminars, and sessions, and view online galleries of last year’s conference fashion show and creativity contest to whet your appetite and start planning for this year's meeting. For information on becoming an ASG member, visit the organization's membership web pages at www.asg.org.

Will you be attending ASG’s conference this year? Which of the sewing workshops and sessions do you look forward to most?
