Thinking ahead to fall

Though I am busy making plans for summer barbecues and trips to the beach, here at Threads we’re well into fall. Swatches of cozy fabrics and pictures of warm clothes fill my office. And I’m excited to say we’re not the only ones—McCall’s has just introduced their fall 2011 pattern collection. So, it got me thinking, are you planning for fall too? How far in advance do you sew for a season? Below are a few great patterns to start you thinking about autumn.

Nancy Zieman introduces a great transitional piece, pattern 6408—a cardigan ideal for the cool evenings. This loose fitting, hip length jacket has a side seam belt that ties in the front or back.

Palmer/Pletsch’s new pattern, 6399, is a fitted top with an optional side invisible zipper. The bust, shoulder, and waistline pleats flatter and are forgiving to the figure. Choose from two sleeve and neckline options.

Make a perfect-for-fall tunic with pattern 6380. View A is loose fitting and flowy and View B has a drawstring waist to add shape. Both views have bust darts and long sleeves that can be rolled up and held with a tab and button. It’s easy to sew and, the best part, it’s only $2.99—you can’t go wrong!

Lastly are two new dresses that are sized according to the bust. Pattern 6397 can be own alone for warmer weather or paired with a top underneath for a great cool-weather jumper. Pattern 6394 has shaped vertical seams that both flatter and add interest—a great choice for color blocking!

NoraBora writes: The first one is only for people who are pencil thin and above average in height. It will be frightful on anyone else. The second is not for those with broad shoulders. The third is is so-so. The fourth draws attention to the hips, so they had better be worth looking at.
