When I was about 7 years old my mother made me an enormous set of reverse applique butterfly wings one Halloween. They were really amazing. I have never forgotten them and wanted to create something fantastic for my daughter, inspired by those original wings my mother made. Back then, my mom didn’t have the advantages of today’s amazing technologies. So I decided to try to recreate the giant sized wings using adobe illustrator, digital fabric printing and many, many, many trial and error attempts at building a wing that would move with my child. (Unlike the wire/nylon wings you see in stores) Using plumbers tubing wrapped around 16 gauge picture hanging wire, grommets and alot of patience, I came up with a partially wired wing with a 100% cotton front and a crepe satin back. The skirt was also made with my own adobe illustrator illustrations, digitally printed onto cotton. It took about 3 months from the original artwork – to printed fabric – to functional wings but now that I have it figured out, they are suprisingly easy to make, about two hours start to finish. I see many more wings in my future! Thanks for letting me share.
Your fabric is FABULOUS! I LOVE the colors and I think your little one will really love this for a long time to come!
Thank you! She has really had fun with it!
