Embellish a Cardigan with a Ruffle

Embellishment is the easiest (and most fun) way to make a ready-to-wear garment original. Create a ruffle with just a strip of fabric and a few basic sewing tools, and you can turn a plain, off-the-rack cardigan into a one-of-a-kind accessory with this tutorial from Quick Stuff to Sew, Vol. 2. Add fabric-covered buttons to give your unique cardigan the perfect finishing touch.

All this restyling is quick and easy. Start by choosing a cardigan. Solid-colored, light- to medium-weight cardigans work best. Then, get creative and choose fabric or a wide trim to make a ruffle. You can use 100-percent cotton, woven, shirt weight or quilting fabric so the ruffle doesn’t weigh down the button band, but you can use a lightweight knit fabric as well.
