How to Create Your Own Eyelet Pattern
Creating your own eyelet pattern may look tricky, but it’s easier than you think with this tutorial from Quick Stuff to Sew, Vol. 2. Fiber-Etch is a gel that eats away the fabric’s fibers and leaves behind a perfectly shaped hole in any design you want. Just heat it with a hair dryer, and you can burn out cotton and silk rayon fabrics in no time. Try it on knits (they won’t ravel), or experiment with woven fabrics for a more frayed look.
We started with Simplicity SewStylish pattern 2730 to get the look, but any bolero pattern will do. This project uses a straight stitch (which doesn’t stretch) on a knit fabric, so select a pattern that won’t need to stretch to fit. Before you begin to sew, be sure to start with a new ballpoint needle in your machine. It won’t snag the fabric and will glide through most knits with ease.
