Dress Barbie, Dress Yourself

Make miniature garments to test patterns. You can go as small as Barbie-size.

How can America’s favorite fashion doll improve your sewing? To test pattern instructions, sew a mini muslin (the term fashion designers use to describe a test garment made from cotton muslin fabric). Photocopy the pattern layouts from the instruction sheets, enlarging them to about Barbie-size. Cut the pieces out of lightweight fabric and sew together.

BONUS: Pass the mini muslins to your favorite kid and start a new game: “Barbie goes to NYC Fashion Week.”
