Sew a Trendsetting Bag

Photo: Julia Erdmann

Our editorial staff can quote dialog and tell you, exactly, what outfits are worn in every scene of The Devil Wears Prada. Our favorite handbag, by far, is the soft leather sack with a cut-out handle. Here, we'll show you how to draft and sew the beauty. Our version from Quick Stuff to Sew, Vol. 1 is a reptile-textured patent leather, but you can use any type of leather or suede you desire, or even try it in a sturdy fabric such as brocade, denim, or melton.

The bag sews up in about two hours, and crafting a custom leather-strip tassel takes another hour or so. The final result is a show-stopper: the bag can be tucked over the shoulder through the cut-out armhole, or you can use the long strap to sling it across your body messenger-style.
