How to Sew Vintage PJ Bottoms

Ah, there’s nothing better than a cozy pair of pj bottoms, a cup of steaming tea, and an afternoon with nothing more pressing than a good book. Well, maybe there is something better: a pair of designer pj bottoms with a bit of good ol’ fashioned vintage flair. With three vintage-y quilter’s calico cottons or flannels (found in any local quilt store), some pretty satin ribbon, and an easy pj pattern (we used See & Sew 3357), you’ll be able to whip out a pair in the morning, then “bum” around in them all day. Heck, you can even wear them out to the store. You’ll be sure to get compliments.

There are adorable, but NO ONE should wear PJs to the store! I love all the wonderful designer, couture designs and information you provide - particularly as a novice, I can dream about my future talent. Help to raise standards for public dress and decorum.
Actually, that would be a super challenge - have four seamstresses make "errand outfits" that look stylish while still being functional.
Thanks and love the magazine, as well as Threads insider!

Unfortunately, Elysbeths, I live in a place where ppl wear off the rack WALMART pj's in public! These beautiful pj's would be a tremendous leap up where I live. I was unfortunate enough to come home from the hospital in summer pj's (I had no real clothes), and instead of taking me home, my brother made me go into Wendy's in my pj's! How I would have loved a pair of those pj's at that time, for sure. Anyway, I was humiliated, and kept waving my hospital bracelet in the air for everyone to see. My point? If you HAVE to wear pj's in public, those are the way to go.....

I love your Avatar, looks like the kitty out my Avatar's litter!

Threads mag all the way! It is my Christmas present every year.

This is the second link I've clicked this morning to find the page is unavailable. What gives?! I'm paying to access something that can't be accessed!

    Hi SewMusical,

I've tested the link and it opens up on my end. Are your Adobe Reader plugins up-to-date?

Let us know if you are still experiencing problems.

I love this! They have the perfect combination of confort and style. May be for use outdoors in my home and if I can add or modify some elements can use them for go to a small supermarket near my home. Imagination is the key!

Looking at the instruction illustration for the step where the leg trim is being put on (3), it appears to be a picture of the inseam, not the side seam. You wouldn't want to make that mistake. The seams and ribbon trim might not match perfectly and it'll be less noticeable on the inseam side.

I suggest another step that will keep the elastic from twisting in future washing/wearings. Once the elastic is evenly distributed through the back and front panels, tack the elastic in a few places with your sewing machine. Take a few stitches at each side seam top and bottom, taking care not to close the channel you want to put the ribbon through.

Although I don't like to see pj bottoms being worn in public, it's better than some other choices I've seen.
