I still can’t believe it, I made my own wedding dress! I selected Butterick pattern 5325, mostly because I loved the shape and silhouette of the dress. The dress was made out of white satin with a full white lace overlay (my first experience with lace). The dress included a pleated bodice and gathered empire waist drape with decorative pin and a chapel train. I did have to make some changes to the pattern, as Butterick thought that making regular seams was appropriate for lace. Instead, I overlapped the lace at the seams, sewed using a zig zag stitch, and cut the excess from both sides. This left visible seamlines that actually created a really nice definition to the shape of the dress. I also replaced a zipper closure (after trying to install a zipper that broke because the dress had to be tight!) with hook and loop closures that worked quite well! Finally, I wanted a bustle, which wasn’t included on the pattern, and installed an Austrian bustle, which uses a loop and ribbon construction. Everything worked out beautifully and I am so happy I tackled this project!
