September is National Sewing Month!

September is National Sewing Month. What will you sew during the month?

CELEBRATE SEWING!
Nowadays we have celebrations for just about everything, including sewing! Actually in 1982 President Ronald Reagan declared September to be National Sewing Month “in recognition of the importance of home sewing to our nation.” There’s even a website dedicated to National Sewing Month created and supported by the Sewing & Craft Alliance (SCA) in partnership with the American Sewing Guild (ASG).

ENTER THE “SEW FOR THE FUN OF IT” CONTEST!
To help celebrate National Sewing Month, SCA in partnership with ASG is sponsoring a contest called for “Sew the FUN of It!” You can enter any sewing project you’ve made in 2012 as long as it was made with fabric, thread, and a sewing machine. Per the rules, the contest runs from September 1, 2012 to September 30, 2012. Winners will be chosen at random and will be notified no later than October 31, 2012.

WHAT WILL YOU SEW?
What are your plans for September sewing? Tell us about your plans in a comment below. Don’t forget to share photos of your sewn projects on our website in the Reader’s Closet gallery. We love to see what you’ve been working on!

THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO LEARN TO SEW OR TO REVITALIZE YOUR SEWING PASSION
National Sewing Month is a great time to invigorate your sewing passion or to introduce yourself to sewing if you’ve never had the opportunity to try it before. Our website contains lots of great sewing instruction from the basics to couture and tailoring techniques. Our magazines, books, and videos offer additional instruction and inspiration. If you’re new to sewing and want to find an instructor, try the SCA searchable instructor database or join the American Sewing Guild. It has chapters and neighborhood groups all across the country where members meet to share their ideas, projects, and passion for sewing, and often schedule experts to teach their group. Local adult education programs often include sewing instruction, and many fabric stores hold classes as well. There are many opportunities to learn to sew, or to improve your sewing techniques, and September is the perfect time to get started!

I've got a jean-style jacket all cut out -- in SILK denim. Hoping to have it done to wear to the Sewing Expo in Novi, MI at the end of the month. :)

My daughter-in-law is an artist and she found a site that prints fabric from her paintings. I have already made her two skirts and the material for four more just came in the mail. I'll be sewing that and two short jackets these next two weeks and adding to two quilts that I have started.
TxMouse, the silk denim sound interesting.

The projects I have lined up for this month are a tunic length shirt for my daughter with a wide lace panel circling it (her request . . . should be interesting); a coat (Vogue 8607 . . . now out of print) for same daughter made of vintage ivory silk with gold embroidery lined with the same fabric reversed so the gold side will show . . . still thinking about how to trim it out; a a vest for my son (his request) of beautiful, brown Italian virgin wool in my stash. Should be a fun month.
