Project Runway Episode 10: “I Get a Kick Out of Fashion”

Tim and Heidi dance with the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall.

What a spectacle on the most recent episode of Project Runway! You practically needed sunglasses to watch, with all of the lame, rhinestones, sequins, and beads. The designers turned to flashy fabrics and embellishments to create a new show costume for the famous and talented Rockettes, the dance troupe featured at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. The Rockettes celebrate an 85th anniversary this year.

The guest judge was actress Debra Messing, who’s recently been featured in the series “Smash,” on NBC, a behind-the-scenes drama about the production of a Broadway musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe.

One of the episode’s highlights was Heidi doing a dance routine with the Rockettes before introducing the challenge.

To dress the Rockettes is a dream assignment for some designers, but it was the end of the road for one of the competitors. Read on to learn who won, who lost and which designs the judges liked best.

The winner

Christopher’s cityscape embellishment wowed the judges.

The loser

Ven’s dress did not impress the judges. It looked more like an ice skating costume.

The rest of the top three

Dmitry’s design:

Melissa’s design:

The rest of the bottom three

Elena’s design:

Sonjia’s design:

Fabio in the middle

Fabio’s design finished neither in the top nor the bottom three.

What did you think?

Did the designs meet your expectations for show costumes for the Rockettes?

Do you think it was time for Ven to go home? Should the loser have been another designer?:

What did you think of Christopher’s winning design? Was there another design you think should have won instead?

What were your top three and bottom three choices from the episode?

As always, I don't completely agree with the judges. I thought Christopher's design was wonderful but that the contrast of the silver and white might not really "pop". I question whether the people in the top balcony will be able to tell what they are looking at. I thought Dmitri's design was more on target, but both were really beautiful and didn't disappoint.

I do agree with identifying Ven's as the losing design. But I thought that Elena's was not as gaudy and terrible as the judges deemed it to be. I thought her design, too, was on target.

    the top two were wonderful.
I just found it interestingthat they thought elena was notgood. It looked just like some they had on display for thedesigers to study.

oh, I forgot... I also thought the outfits the Rocketts were in were pretty bad...

Christpher's win was no surprise to anyone. He was dead on and I don't feel anyone was close. Glad to see arrogant Ven ousted, now for Elana and the air will be cleared.

I agree with much of the above, especially Elena's cobalt blue number. Ven should have been eliminated when he outrageously embarrassed the woman that was brought in by a friend. That was a very hard episode to watch. Christopher's outfit was beautiful.

I was torn between Christopher ad Dimitry; although, I believe Dimitry's as better. I thought Christophr's skyline would have showed up better with black inthe background for the see-through fabric and place the jewels on the fabric to represent the stars like he said. I didn't care for the skirt but his idea was great and I really tinnk that is what made the decision for te judges between the two.

I ddn't really have a third choice,it would not have been Fabio because it looked too "armorish". I thought she could go into battle---gladiator.

There were too many ice skater looks this time. I thought it was time for Ven to go. He apparently has limited talent. I don't care for Elana at all or Melissa. Sonji has put out some looks I really liked. But right now, the three men are the best. They have way more talet than the women.

Glad to see Ven gone. He's a good technician with limited design abilities outside of his signature "origami" technique -a shame given his construction skills.

Chris and Dimitry were in a dead heat for this one. I could see the judges going either way. Chris's was a bit more "wholesome" in keeping with the Rockettes image, but I agree with an earlier post that the details may not read from a distance.

Elena's dress was overdone and tacky. Sonji's dress lacked a concept. Fabio's design looked like armor with a matching turtleneck. Melissa's dress was interesting, but not quite right somehow.

This isn't a great season. The designers' are competent but not exceptional.

I totally agreed with the winning design. It was the ONLY one that was truly worthy of consideration for such a well-known performing group.
Christopher had inspiration and a definite design from the first moments of the 'challenge'.
It did surprise me when Tim tried to do the 'kick'. Only John Cleese could do THAT (in 'The Out-of-Towners', 1999).
