Echo the Scorpion
This is Echo. She is an 8 year old Boston Terrier who is no stranger to costumes.
This Halloween, she is dressed as a scary scorpion! To create her costume, first off measurements were taken. Namely, neck, back length, shoulders, waist. I then drew a mock up of what to cut, based on the measurements and then I coorolated those to a fitted shirt she has.
The bodice is made of a very stretchy brown knit fabric. It is double layered for clean seams and for added durability and stability. The neck is secured with two sets of velcro, as is the strap that wraps under her belly.
Six scorpion legs made of latex were sewn to the bodice, about 1.5 inches apart. The middle leg on the right side is attached to the wrap around strap, to keep it in sync with the other legs, but still allow sizing flexibilty. If that makes sense.
Stuffing and wire were incorporated into the tail and claws to add shape and stability without weight. The wire is just a hanger that has been shaped.
Additionally, around base of the tail and under Echo's belly is a nylon adjustlable strap to keep the tail from sliding off the costume. The back of the scorpion is secured to the neckline.
The latex and fabric colors were chosen specifically to match and compliment Echo's brindle coloring and she was photographed on a dried out Kansas baseball field to get an authentic desert look. For me, it's all about the details.
Thanks and happy Halloween!
