Start with empty thread spool, cut three layers of batting and one strip of fabric
roll it all together and hand stitch seam
gather each end and stick raw edges in with you finger, make sure you can see the spooler opening
use any decorative thread of your choice and thread it around

Here's an easy pin cushion that can be used on your bobbin winder while not it use. It's out of the way and easy to reach when you are sewing and taking pins off as you sew.
