The holiday season is approaching quickly, and for this holiday season, Threads is giving away The Fashion Designer's Handbook and Fashion Kit by Marjorie Galen (Workman Publishing, 2011). This would be a great holiday gift for your 7- to 12-year-old daughter, granddaughter, niece, or anyone you know who loves to design, style, and express themself through fashion.

Galen starts with the fundamentals, showing readers how to complete basic stitches, utilize different fabrics and sewing tools, and create a few simple, no-sew items. Diving into this book, girls will be able to come out making cute outfits such as a "Princess Party Dress," a mod mini skirt, and a Chanel-inspired "Coco Jacket." The kit includes all the tools your fashionista will need to design and sew clothes for her 11½ inch dolls and herself such as: a doll-sized dress-maker dress form, an instruction book, 27 patterns, ribbon, measuring tape, thread, and 3 different fabric prints.

Do you know someone who you think would love this as a holiday gift? If so, leave a comment explaining why, and you will be entered into our drawing for this kit. The deadline for your entry is December 11 at midnight, and the winner will be chosen the week of the 17th and will be notified via email. Good luck!

Having already a negative understanding on needles due to his frequent hospital stays I would love to redefine the term for him the way his great grandfather understood it as a tool to make great things happen through the world of sewing!

togorose togorose writes: I would like to win this book for my granddaughter. She is interested in sewing and I have been trying to teach her all I can. She is only six years old, but is trying so hard to learn. She wants to help in making a dress for herself and her little friend, but she cannot decide what pattern to pick out of all the patterns I have in her and her friends size. I'm thinking I would like to start her sewing a simple shift summer dress. I think she would treasure any sewing book she gets. Thank you.

She asked for one, but as we know, a lot of those toy sewing machines are not that great to put it mildly. Well, my mother-in-law (Claire's grandmother) has a new quality machine and has been sewing with her this year. They have both had quite the good time together. Claire just loves to sew and just loves clothes. She would so LOVE to have this kit. I'd love to see her win it!

ckartist ckartist writes: I am compiling a "sewing kit" for my granddaughter and searching for an appropriate book to go along with it, peek her interest and get her started. This looks like a great addition to what I have in mind. It's in a family tradition of sorts, as well. My mother had a "Peggy" doll with patterns and notions from early in the twentieth century.(I don't know what happened to it and wish I could find it or one like it.)
