The theater dress

This is a dress I made for my daughter to replicate one I saw in a women’s clothing catalog. The pattern comes from the November issue of the Burda magazine, called the “theater dress”. I made it in a medium weight ponte knit, just like the catalog dress, that was a dream to work with. Since the dress silhouette is quite fitted, getting the dress to fit well was a challenge. An issue complicated by the fact that my daughter lives several states away and not available for the mulitple muslin fittings it required. Despite those challenges the finished dress turned out beautifully – fit just right, style just right and amazingly similar to the dress I saw in the catalog.

Your daughter's dress is beautiful and fits her perfectly. I too sew for my daughter who lives several hundred miles away. I always worry about the fit and almost every time, it fits just right.

Yours looks better than the original! I also sew for my daughter on occasion. She left a blouse in her closet when she returned to college after a holiday. The fabric was not very good. I used it to make a pattern for the blouse in a better fabric. The best compliment was.."I like the blouse you sent, where did you buy it?"

Oh, I am so glad to see someone making this pattern. I love this, the fit is perfect! I thought the catalog one was made out of satin, and therefore did not try it, but this ponte knit is absolutely beautiful. I googled it and found that this knit is a combination of RAYON, POLYESTER and SPANDEX. I wonder if my local shops have heard that name. Thanks for the inspiration!
