Butterick: Early Summer 2013

Pattern B5889

Make the transition from blustery weather with Butterick’s latest collection!

For warmer days, try pattern B5889, an oversized top or tunic with slip openings on the sleeve. The top includes bias neck binding and front button bands, with the added options of flaps, pockets, and sleeves with continuous lap-and-button cuffs. The tunic includes a self belt with belt carriers, and stitched hem. Each are ideally sewn using georgette, crepe de chine, or rayon-blend fabric for an airy feel.

Designer Katherine Tilton created a cool summer top in her pattern B5891. This loose-fitting top has collar variations, side pockets, and a shaped hemline; and for the colder nights, it can be made with longer sleeves. Options also include a raised neckline, mock neck, front pleated peplum, and narrow hem. Use a double-sided fabric for an interesting pattern variation.

Update your summer dress collection with pattern B5894. This lined Misses dress has a semi-fitted bodice. It includes optional scalloped seam details, and has either a straight or a-line skirt. It is best made with dupioni, linen, faille, or shantung fabric. For an interesting detail make it using two contrasting or complementary fabrics that will look fabulous on any summer evening.

Take a lighter approach to warmer work days with pattern B5899. It’s a loose-fitting, lined jacket with shoulder pads, side panels, side front pockets, and sleeve pleats. It can be paired with a close-fitting pullover dress or top and a skirt or straight-legged pants with elastic waist. It’s a comfy combination for a day at the office.
