American Sewing Expo’s 2013 Contests Open for Entry

The top 3 winning American Sewing Expo Passion for Fashion designs from 2012's competition: (left to right) second place, Michael Kawa of Pontiac, Michigan; first place, Cheryl Zemke of Riverview, Michigan; third place, Mila Pershyn of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. (With celebrity judge Joe Faris of Motor City Design.)

The 2012 design challenge was to design a fashion-forward insect-inspired outfit for a client to wear to the opening reception for the Science Museum's new Insect Pavilion.

Every year, the American Sewing Expo in Novi, Michigan, offers several opportunities for attendees to participate in sewing contests, and the competitions are now open for entry for this year’s show (to be held September 27-29). The entry and submission deadlines and requirements for each contest are different. Here’s a rundown:

• The 7th annual Passion for Fashion competition is a live challenge designed to showcase an avid sewer’s design and sewing talents. Participants are given a design challenge scenario and then have one day (September 27) to create their challenge projects while expo attendees watch from the sidelines. The following day, contestants finish the work, fit their models, and send their creations down the contest runway where they are judged by a panel of fashion experts. The deadline to enter is July 1, 2013. Click here for the entry form and requirements.

• The Innovation Generation contest is for young sewers ages 8 through 18. Anyone in this age range can enter by filling out the entry application and sending a garment that they have sewn in its entirety. All contestants participate in a runway show wearing their garments, which will be pre-judged based on the design’s degree of difficulty, the overall finished appearance, and the overall quality of construction. The entry deadline is September 9, 2013. Click here for entry details.

• The Push the Envelope — Anything Goes contest is open to anyone who wishes to enter. The first 100 entrants (by July 1) will receive three products from A&E Consumer Products to use in their contest projects, which they can use to make anything sewn: quilt, garment, home décor item, accessory, etc.-let your imagination run free. All projects must be received for judging by August 30, 2013, and the winning entries will be announced on September 27 and displayed at the expo. The deadline for entry is July 1, 2013. Did I read the qualifications correctly? You must be of ages between 8 and 18 only? No experienced sewers? Darn.

Oh! Just ignore my last comment. I see now that there are different categories in which to enter. OK. Thanks.
