Project Runway Season 12, Episode 10: “Project Runway SuperFan!”

Helen Castillo's winning design.

In the latest episode, Project Runway’s greatest fans were the inspiration for the designers.

“SuperFans” submitted videos for a chance to come to New York City and work with a competing designer to achieve a new look. This was also the Loreal Paris challenge, so new hair styles and makeup were included in each makeover.

Designer Erin Fetherston was the guest judge, and Zanna Roberts Rassi, Marie Claire Senior Fashion Editor, sat in for Nina Garcia.

The winner

Helen Castillo’s superfan client asked for a red-carpet worthy design. She got her wish! The judges loved the look and gave the win to Helen.

The loser

Ken Laurence’s superfan client was happy with her dress – but the judges weren’t. For all of Ken’s volatility, he has produced mostly mediocre designs the whole season. This was his last one, as the judges said goodbye Ken.

The rest of the designs

Alexander Pope’s design was unfinished. He narrowly avoided being sent home instead of Ken.

Justin LeBlanc’s design featured an embroidered rendition of his superfan client’s signature. A nice twist on the fan/autograph concept.

Alexandria von Bromssen’s young superfan client wanted an outfit for job interviews. This was a total dud, and Alexandria was in the bottom three with Ken and Alexander.

Bradon McDonald’s dress. Bradon was a close second to Helen. He, as Helen did, executed his client’s wishes superbly. Bradon’s superfan, a suburban mom, wanted to look urban and edgy.

What did you think?

Were you as superglad as I was to see Ken go? His tirades made me stressed out, just watching!

Or do you think that Alexander or Alexandria’s designs were worse than Ken’s? It was a tough call for me. Alexandria’s design was so far off the mark. Alexander had a good concept, but it was no-where near finished.

Did you compete in the SuperFan contest for this episode?

Don’t you think they should make it part of every season?

The final three just showed their designs at New York Fashion Week. Who do you think the finalists were?

And who do you think will be out next?

I had Helen Castillo as a student in couture construction when she was at the Fashion Institute of Technology, so was delighted to see she won here. A good student with a good eye and good technical skills--I hope she wins!

I personally think the final three will be Helen, Kate and Braden. That said, the usually skilled Kate must have been in the woods again because her model looked more like Robin Hood than ....whatever it was she was supposed to look like.
I am GLAD to see than nasty little banty rooster Ken gone! He got away with MURDER on this show and I found it very interesting that when it was a man he was going toe to toe with, there were no threats of "don't make me come over there" when it wasn't a girl he was bullying. All he could do was scream like the diva he is to "get someone up here NOW!" He was so rude wnen Alexander and Braden tried to come in the room it was just unbelievable. He works very hard at trying to make others feel as powerless as he himself does, just like my grandmothers nasty little chihuahua. I also found it interesting when Ken was told to clean up his space that there were no hugs or words of encouragement from Tim. I have never seen Tim behave so coldly toward a designer and I am proud of him for not letting Ken off the hook just because he was eliminated. I am glad the judges allowed the nasty little piece of work to stay long enough to allow his fan model to have her moment, even if you COULD have picked up that dress at Target or Walmart.

Anyone else notice that the designer with the best proportioned model usually wins the real woman challenge? I figured that whoever got the tallest, thinest fan would win, and I was right. Not to discount Helen's dress, because it was spectacular, and the makeover was the most radical. I don't think that Alexandria's jacket was great, but the other pieces were o.k. Don't think that her fabric choice worked for the jacket back - a little too boingy. Maybe a wool crepe would have draped more beautifully. Again, she gave the client what the client wanted. I don't expect her to last much longer. Alexander's ensemble would normally have been a good reason to get sent home. I am wondering if Heidi and the other judges were aware of Ken's meltdown? He really should have been sent home several weeks ago - his work has been less than mediocre, and his tantrums were completely inappropriate. Some comments on Facebook have said that Alexander shouldn't have pushed the ironing board out of the way and thrown the iron. Ken was being such a controlling little witch, I don't blame Alexander at all. I still think that they need to start giving psychological evaluations to the top 30 contenders before selecting their designers for the season, because this season has been bad between Ken and Sandro. Casting for drama is putting the personal safety, not to mention emotional equilibrium, of the other designers in danger. Not cool. I think that Kate, helen, and Bradon will be the top three.

Have to agree with Soli, the thinner the "real" body is the greater the chance of winning. Helen's dress was lovely and the drama of long hippie bangs to short chic hair was a Cinderella style transformation. Katelyn's look may have been less appealing to some tastes, but it took a lot of skill to take a less perfect middle aged body and give her a little bit of cool and edgy.

There should be more "real" body challenges. Whether it's superfan or women who have lost a lot of weight or older adults, it's a better test of design and fitting skills. Fashion Star did a challenge to create a look that looked good on both a regular and plus size model.

Good riddance to the Ken. PR is such an opportunity to showcase yourself, even if you don't win. Why act like such a egomaniac? Who would hire him? A mediocre talent with a massive dose of hubris. Sad that he knows that that is true about him (conversation with his mother) but thinks the world should just take it.

I think Kate, Helen and Bradon will make it to the end. Alexandria's clothes are a bit sad. Alexander, Dom and Justin are talented but not exceptional. But this is PR, so who knows....

I don't like when the judges are unkind to the real world models. The judges ask the models if they like their dress. Then they proceed to rip the garment apart making the real world model feel like an idiot. At least this season they all were complemented on their make overs. I thought Kate's design was very flattering to the model on the runway but didn't like the views of the lace up close in the studio. It was way past time for Ken to go. He should have been sent packing after the first blow-up. I think Kate or Helen will be the final winner. Kate has been the most consistent all season and Helen has finally found her 'voice'.
