Halloween Costume Contest 2013

We’re Pan-Am! Fly us! :)

The jacket pattern is Vogue 8135.  The skirt pattern is Vogue 2893.  (Both patterns have been discontinued.)  The fabric is 100% cotton quitling fabric, interfaced with Pellon 911FF Fusible Featherweight interfacing.

I made the caps from the same blue cotton, also interfaced.  I used stiff plastic, from a frozen dinner plastic tray, to stiffen the “flag” on the cap.

I made the “flight bags” as well, from a pattern that I made up.  I used plastic tapestry grid plus a piece of mat board to stiffen the bag’s bottom.  I used 3/8″ plastic tubing for the handles, covered with fabric.  I printed the bags’ Pan-Am logos on a color laser printer, then used Wonder-Under to fuse them to the bag.  The laser printed enblem survived the heat of the fusing, and are also reasonably waterproof.  (The printing doesn’t run when wet as with stuff printed on an inkjet printer.)

For the pins for the cap and jacket, I printed picture of Pan-Am emblems on a color laser jet printer, glue them to mat board, and then cut them out with an Exacto knife.  In order to pin them to the cap and jacket, I added safety pins attached with 3M packing tape on the back.

The white piping on caps & bags is white cotton, with 3/32″ cotton cording.
