Halloween Costume Contest 2013

Day Of The Dead Man

Day Of The Dead Skeleton Man

I love Halloween and I always look forward to making the costumes each year for my family.  This year I took a kind of upcycle approach to my husbands costume.  I used bits and pieces of old clothing and costumes to make the new and original item you see in the photos.

The skelleton pattern on his costume was cut from a child size costume I found at the resale shop.  It was cut out and sewn on to more appropriate sized black garments.

The hat I also found at the resale shop.  It started out as a paper and wire hat that I covered with some knit fabric and than cut up some old halloween decorations to glue onto the hat for the embelishments.

The tail coat is what I am most proud of.  I used one of my hubby’s old work jackets and cut it short in front.  I added two new pannels in the back to add all the length in the tails.  It came out so cool.  I finished it off by making a pocket squair out of some old satin and a flower to finish the look.

I had sculpted a mask as well but it bothered him and made it more difficult to see.  He came home late from work so there was no time to do make up.  I did put a lot of work building the mask with paper towls and modpodge.  I finished the mask by modpodging a layer of white cotton over the papertowl layers to smooth out the bumps a bit.
