Tip: Light Up Your Fabric While Machine Sewing

Threads magazine - 175 - Oct./Nov. 2014

This reader-submitted tip was originally featured in Threads #175 (October/November 2014).

[UPDATE: This product is no longer available.]

For many years, I looked for a better way to shine additional light on my fabric as it moves across my sewing machine’s needle plate. I think I’ve finally found the answer. While there are many products designed for the sewer, I think this works the best. I attached a small, self-adhesive LED light (Sylvania DOT-it Self-Adhesive Bright White LED Light) to the right, above the sewing machine bed. Thanks to its rotating head, I can direct the light to shine where the needle meets the fabric. These bright lights are not expensive, they come in many sizes and colors, and they work wonderfully to solve the problem of seeing while sewing without obstructing my view.

I think this tip is great, it would be even better if you could find this light. I live in Colorado just like the tipster,(Susan Williams)does. I have looked in stores and on-line and I haven't been able to find the Sylvania directional puck light anywhere!!!They have puck lights with the three tiny LED lights, but you cannot direct the beam. As you get older, you need that extra light, PLEASE HELP!!!!

They have them on Amazon, $9.89

Thank you all for the info on attempting to find these lights. Unfortunately, I did try Amazon before, I also used the Amazon link that (iisrosered) (Thank You), suggested. The lights that were on Amazon are not the directional/swivel spot light that the picture in Threads was showing. You cannot reposition the the beam on the lights offered on Amazon. I did find that exact light on another web site, but they were no longer available. Thanks for the help anyway!!!!

Perhaps Threads could mention this great idea and the enthusiasm it has generated to some manufacturer of these lights. It is indeed a great idea. Thanks. BER
