Project Runway Season 13: Episode 11, “The Highest Bidder”

Recurring challenge winners, Amanda and Kini, are paired together.

Five storage units occupied the room as Tim announced this week’s challenge at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Each unit was filled with unknown materials that the designers were expected to bid on in teams of two. Each team got $500 for the auction and would have to use the contents inside the unit(s) for their three-look collection. Amanda and Kini got a unit filled with children’s toys; Emily and Korina’s units had sofas, numerous textiles, and a wedding dress; and Sean and Char were left with a beautiful blue blanket and a mix of leather materials. One designer per team was also sent to Mood to find a coordinating textile to use for the majority of their third look. This was another two-day challenge, and the winner will receive Philip B hair and styling products for a year’s worth of runway shows.

This week’s guest judge was the renowned Christian Siriano. Sean and Char created a sleek sportwear collection that was clearly cohesive, but a bit on the safe side. In particular, the judges were worried that Char’s pieces weren’t sophisticated enough. Emily and Korina’s collection had completely mixed reviews. Nina was appalled that Korina willingly purchased the fabric for the bright-colored sweater, which she found distasteful. Heidi and Zac weren’t as put off by the overall aesthetic, however. Finally, Kini and Amanda “wowed” the judges with all three of their striking looks. The way they manipulated their materials to create elegant-looking pieces was sensational. Kini’s soccer ball dress and quilted ottoman jacket were especially successful.

As a result, Amanda and Kini were the unquestionable winning team. Kini was the overall winner, Sean and Emily were safe, and Korina and Char were asked to complete a second challenge on the spot. In just one hour, they had to create a new look (with help from one other designer) that would convince the judges that they deserved to stay in the competition. In the end, Char was the winner and Korina was sent home.

I can’t say I was surprised by this week’s outcome. The fact that the bulk of the episode was devoted to how confident Korina was about being ready for fashion week suggested that she probably wouldn’t be in the running for much longer. I don’t think I’ve seen a more stunning outfit from Char, however. Her second runway attempt was simply spectacular. Then, there’s Kini. Even when he seems nervous about a challenge, he does an incredible job and wins. I can’t wait to see what he has in store for us in the upcoming episodes!

Did you enjoy this challenge? Which team was your favorite? How did you feel about how Korina portrayed herself in this episode? Please share your thoughts below!

Glad to see Korina sent home. Clearly, she is a better designer than Char but I am just over her. I think Char has more class in her little finger than Korina has in her whole body. Char's dress was better in the final challenge and Korina's body of work was far better than Char's, it is what it is.
That being said, Korina is clearly broken hearted over the loss and for the show to make her help the person who beat her is just cruel. I see tomorrow, Korina will be asked to help Char and of course she has a meltdown over it, who wouldn't?
I guess P.R. isn't beneath this kind of mistreatment to their designers because after all, this is a television show and the ratings are the true rulers of the runway.
