Halloween Costume Contest 2014

Elsa and Olaf

Elsa and Olaf were the perfect choice for the first Halloween my 21 month old grandson, Ethan, would spend with his 7 year old half-sister, Ava, since she had moved in with them earlier in the year. I began Elsa’s costume with a long sleeve t-shirt and McCalls 5499 for the skirt, then I pinned and draped the top until I got the look I wanted. I used teal polyester/metallic from my stash along with satin fabric, some organza with glitter snowflakes and sparkle sequin trim I picked up here and there. I ended up cutting off the t-shirt sleeves and using the tulle from the veil from Ava’s flower girl dress she wore when her dad married my daughter because the tulle was so soft. Then when I tried it on her, I had to alter it since she is so thin and I ended up putting tie ends to make a bow in back to be sure it fit well and she was still able to get it on and off. I then inverted the flower girl veil attachment to use like a choker and drape the tulle over the top of the dress and we were done. For Olaf I began with McCalls 6812 which was perfect for a snowman. Using white fleece and some elastic and extra stuffing, some Olaf legs sewn on the bottom but not meeting in the middle to give mobility and some stuffed fleece buttons; the body of the costume went together quickly. The hat came with the pattern and I sewed the pipe cleaners in as I was sewing it together and made the facial features out of felt. They went to two functions before Halloween and it was Texas hot so Olaf couldn’t wear his arms (black t-shirt) but they were a hit – pictures taken by people every few steps. But by Halloween a cold front came in just in time so Olaf was nice and comfy.
