Beornsdatter, the Bear: from The Hobbit

Beornsdatter, a Bear/shape changer. from The Hobbit.

Beornsdatter, is based on Beorn the bear/shape changer man from The Hobbit. My daughter wanted an outfit that was very much a bear, without being a fur suit. I designed a jacket from black faux leather trimmed with black fur, boot covers are also made of fur. Black pants and a copper shirt are worn underneath. The head is a soft sculpture, made from upholstery foam. It was shaped into the basic shape of a bear’s head, then covered with fur. Soft sculpture detailed the shape and the headpiece drapes down over the shoulders. The claws, nose, teeth, upper palate, eyes and necklace are made from Scuply clay. The jacket is embellished with turquoise and copper beads, claw beads and copperwire jewelry. When she wore the outfit, she also painted her face to look more “bearish”, however those photos were a little dark to see the details of the outfit.
