Pattern Review: McCall’s 6844 Misses’ Cardigans

Threads magazine - 177 - Feb./Mar. 2015

Sewing Tip: The sleeves are narrow, so if you want to accommodate layers, increase the sleeve circumference.

This review was originally featured in Threads #177 (February/March 2015). If this pattern is no longer readily available via the pattern company, try searching online for the pattern name and number, or try Etsy.com or eBay.com.

McCall’s 6844

These shawl-collar cardigans come in two styles and two length options. One style has minimal shaping and can end at the mid-hip or lower thigh. The other view has a waistline seam attached to a full-circle flounce that starts at the midsection and extends into a longer back hemline, or the flounce can be constructed with an even hemline that ends at the lower thigh. The sewing directions are well-written and illustrations are clear. The pattern suggests pressing the waist seam allowances up toward the garment’s bodice, but our tester found the seam allowances wanted to turn toward the flounce and says it does not matter which way they are pressed. Recommended for sweater, novelty, and lightweight interlock knits, as well as stretch velvet, stretch lace, and polar fleece.

(Sized Misses’/Miss Petite XS-XXL [4-26] for busts 29.5-48 in.)

Sewing Tip: The sleeves are narrow, so if you want to accommodate layers, increase the sleeve circumference.
