Twist-Free Hand Sewing

submitted by Sharon Blair
from Threads #118

To help prevent your thread from twisting as you hand sew, fill a bobbin with the thread you’re going to use for hand sewing. Winding the thread onto a bobbin seems to eliminate the twist and assures kink-free (and hassle-free) hand sewing.

The same twist-free hand sewing can be achieved by threading your needle with the thread-end cut from the spool. Don't thread the needle with the end you hold as you pull the thread, unrolling the spool. It has to do with the twist of the thread as it's manufactured. The twist works for machines but is backward for hand sewing.
