Fancy Fabrics Challenge 2014

Embroidered Elegance from India

Front View

This gorgeous embroidered silk was purchased on a trip to India.  The color just screams ‘holiday’ to me, so I just had to make this for our company Holiday Dinner.

I drafted the pattern from my torso sloper, using a neckline idea from the wonderful vintage pattern book ‘Practical Dress Design’ by Mabel Irwin.  There’s a faux sleeve opening that mimics the openness of the neckline.  The back zipper was handset to avoid visible topstitching.  For wearing ease, the dress is fully lined and has a kick pleat.

Oh! I love the neckline and the little faux openings at the end of the sleeves. Isn't it wonderful to be able to have a unique party dress -- it's almost a work of art. Hand stitching the zipper is the way to go on a special dress like this one.
