Forest Floor in Autumn

From the never ending stream of Threads’ inspirational material this handbag was done using a recent article on making your own lace from fabric scraps.  I began with constructing the main body from a silk drape that had seen better days.  This was overlaid with the ‘lace’ made with fabric from my ever growing collection of left over material from other projects.  I work exclusively with natural fabrics so the lace is made from other silk and linen bits.  This was overlaid on to the base fabric that was lined with a lovely green silk habutai.

Gingko leaves embroidered using stumpwork and other surface embroidery techniques were scattered over the bag. The effect was that of a pile of leafy material on the forest floor in varying degrees of detail.

The bag was sewn up using knotted pearl stitch with beading.  I used the remaining stranded cotton embroidery floss to make up the tasselled braid both to provide closure and to sling the bag over one’s shoulder.
