Diane Ericson: The Ventana Jacket & Vest 327

This is a head-turning, art-to-wear jacket or vest, made with unconventional techniques. It features asymmetrical curved tucks for fitting and shaping on the outside, lapped seams, and a pocket hidden in a horizontal tuck on the left front. The loose-fitting design has a front lapel that extends above the neckline to form the back collar, which is shaped with partially sewn tucks, a tie-front closure, and partial side-seam openings. The one-piece, three-quarter-length sleeves are shaped with a partial tuck along the top and an optional underarm dart. The sleeve also has a curved hemline with a faced hem, which is turned back and stitched in place to look like a separate cuff. Although the garment was time-consuming to make, our tester found the process enjoyable. The instructions include fitting help, closure ideas, and design techniques for finishing the garment edges. If you choose raw edges, use fabrics such as melton, felted wool, or lightweight boiled wool. Other options include wool jersey, polar fleece, linen, cotton, and men's suiting.

(Sized XS–3X for busts 30–56 in.)

Sewing Tip: The jacket version's wrist opening is on the narrow side, so check the width and adjust, if necessary, before cutting.
