    Does this only apply to the top button or should all of them be placed ΒΌ of the way from the top of the buttonhole?

    It is a good idea. The gravity could keep the plaid lines aligned. However, the overlap would probably move in the other direction to disturb the balance. If the button below were to be placed at the lower quarter of the buttonhole, it could anchor the overlap/underlap relative position.
