For my Steampunk Witch costume, I used Simplicity 2172. It was the pattern itself that was the inspiration. I had long wanted to make something steampunk-y, and it was near Halloween (the time of witches!), I decided to combine the two ideas. The costume consists of a long, cut-away jacket, cinched with ties at the back, over a bustier and a long purchased black skirt. For the jacket, I used a swirly fabric lined in some beautiful black satin that was woven with tiny dots of color . . . the lining looked like the starry night sky! You can see it a bit on the jacked detail photo. I used some vintage-looking cloak clasps for the closures. Because of the cinching at the back, fitting wasn’t an issue at all. I went with a slightly small size so it would be quite fitted when worn. At the shoulder flanges, I attached a highly textural folded ribbon . . . you can see it a bit on the closeup photo. It gives the impression of spikes and a bit of edginess. I found some soft, medium-weight faux leather for the bustier. I used the same fabric for the hat (a simple cone with an attached brim). Â
The only change I made was an addition, really. I added some buttoned cuffs made from satin with two differently sized opened up circles of lace attached along its edge. It added a little feminine touch to an otherwise imposing outfit. Oh, and I also decided not to attach the ruffle around the neckline, although some black lace might have looked just fine. Overall, this costume was fun to wear, and I got quite a few looks when out and about!
you have the right look for this costume!
Great Job !
