NYC is an Everchanging Source for Fashion Exhibits

Toledo: (L) Hermaphrodite Dress, circa 2005, garnet silk taffeta.
(R) Cocoon Sleeve Gown, spring/summer 1998, taupe silk taffeta.

New York City provides visitors with constantly changing exhibits that attract anyone interested in garment sewing and fashion.  Here are 3 of the current “don’t miss” exhibits:

MURIEL KING: ARTIST OF FASHION is on display at the Museum at FIT.  There’s not much time left to see this exhibit as it ends on April 4. Muriel King (1900-1977) was sought out in the 1930s and 40s by the glamorous women of Hollywood and high society, but has been largely overlooked today. This unique American designer, will surely be rediscovered in this display.

VALENTINA: AMERICAN COUTURE AND THE CULT OF CELEBRITY is presented at the Museum of the City of New York until May 17 and is the first exhibition to trace the career of this legendary designer. The display features never-before-exhibited gowns, accessories, photographs, and printed matter from the collections of the Museum of the City of New York, the Valentina family, and other major collections.

The artistry of Isabel Toledo will be saluted in ISABEL TOLEDO: FASHION FROM THE INSIDE OUT, presented by the Museum at FIT from June 17 to September 26, 2009. This mid-career retrospective will display approximately 70 iconic looks from the mid-1980s to the present, including pieces from Toledo’s highly praised 2007-2008 collections as creative director of Anne Klein.

I had the pleasure of attending "FIT on the Runway" last Monday night. I am in awe of the talent in that room! This is the graduating class I had the pleasure of sitting in the front row press section as i was there to write an article for a local newspaper. This stuff was absolutely amazing, and I can't describe most of it, only that it was so innovative, and can't believe it was designed and executed by 20 somethings. Go on the website wwww.guestofaguest.com/galleries/album862/ and you will see what I mean. Thing is, these 'kids' go to the same type of fabric stores we all go to, just goes to show what a different pair of eyes can see.
