Summer Sewing Challenge - Express Yourself in Linen

Linen n Lace Christening Gown

Bodice Close up

I love heirloom sewing, and nothing is prettier than a pure white Christening Gown in Linen and Lace!

I used 100% cotton linen to make this Christening Gown using the pattern called “Boys Christening Gown” #112, by Michie Mooney. On the collar, I used an embroidery motif from the Martha Pullen Inc. machine embroidery CD, “Bonnets and Booties”. All the exposed seams are serged, and the collar, hem, and sleeve edges are finished with a variety of heirloom sewing techniques, which not only give the gown a beautiful finish, but keep the linen from raveling as well. There is a matching slip made of 100% cotton batiste. Cotton linen, when stored and cared for properly, will last for many years. This makes it the perfect choice for heirloom garments that hopefully will become family treasures passed down through generations!

100% cotton linen? Cotton is one plant-based fiber and linen is another plant-based fiber. Each comes from a different plant -- cotton comes from the cotton plant and linen comes from the bast fiber of the flax plant.

So -- there is no "100% cotton linen" -- suspect that your fabric is likely cotton.

Nice job on the christening gown though - it's sure to become a family heirloom linen or not.

Actually my fabric is a linen and cotton blend. I still have the bolt and checked the content. So, although not 100% linen, it is still an all natural fiber that gives the appearance of linen. I hope it still qualifies for the contest.

I wouldn't split fibers about cotton/linen. Many bolts will specify the percentage, usually 60-40. Both will tolerate high temps and can be laundered for subsequent wearings. Both can be whitened with "Restoration." More important: Thread and trims must also be plant based fibers. Rayon, nylon or poly will melt or turn yellow with age. Use of a treatment to prevent ravel and fray is not recommended because they will turn brown after ironing.
