Perfect Partners: Black and White
comments (4) July 25th, 2009 in sewing, design, reader's closetI used McCall's 5433, Palmer Pletsch Perfect Fit Shirt, to make this shirt for my Aunt Anna Ruth, whose FAVORITE fabric is linen (she lives in Galveston), and she loves the black-and-white combination.
Fabric:
The body is 100% linen in a black/white yarn-dye, and the placket is 100% linen in bleached white. (I made her a pair of white linen pants too, underlined in cotton batiste.) I washed/dried both pieces of fabric twice before cutting.
Alterations:
Alterations included a full bust adjustment and shortening the length of both the body and the sleeves.
Design changes:
I cut the sleeves on the bias to make use of the checks as a design element, and I used the contrasting white front placket and collar partly to coordinate with her pants, but partly to break up the design of the checks.
(The shirt is on my dressform in one of the pictures, and I couldn't get it dialed down far enough in the hips for Anna Ruth's size, so that's why it's not buttoned at the hips.)
Anna Ruth LOVES her new outfit and I had lots of fun making it for her.

Great job. Good on you for sewing for others too because it isn't easy sometimes!
