Since linen is cloth with a long history, I wanted to create a garment with a bit of a vintage feel. My thought was a summer "walking suit", only updated. I drafted the  jacket to be looser and crop length, with details such as pintucking on the sleeves, bound buttonholes and fabric-covered buttons of linen, with a single motif embroidered on them. I wanted some embellishment but choose to forego machine embroidery and use freemotion technique, which seemed more appropriate. The peach colored "corsage" was created from a single piece of hand-tinted gauze that was wound and fashioned into a flower shape. Freemotion flowers also embellish the skirt, which has hand-dyed lace and pintuck details. Because the fabric was a lovely but uncommon taupe-moss-green color, I had a difficult time finding the right color bias, so I cut my own from cotton fabric. The tulle layers on the skirt also had to be hand-tinted to achieve the right color hue. Though I didn't have much time (and there was an awful lot of handwork!), linen is a wonderful fiber for all these techniques.

I love all the embellishments too, except for one thing, the orange flower. The flower in itself is beautiful, but for me, it tips the balance on the suit, it becomes too much (sometimes less is more, if you know what I mean) and draws the attention away from the other, beautiful embellishments. But, I realize that this of course is a matter of taste, and taste will always vary (there's a saying where I live: "Taste is like the behind - split!" ;P). Anyway, thanks so much for entering this, so we could enjoy seeing it! It's so wonderful that people take the time to do such things today, keeping traditions alive and well (even if we don't have to). I hope I will get that good (and as patient) at some point! :)
