As fashion challenges go, an ensemble for a full term pregnant woman has to be at the bottom of my wish list. Throughout last night’s program we heard about “pregnancy clothes” and “pregnancy chic”—what happened to calling them maternity clothes?
Even though the topic was not as universal as usual, the designers did a remarkable job of giving us a good show. Shirin ran away with the prize for a beautiful dress and coat ensemble. I might consider wearing it without being pregnant. There were several other strong honorable mentions. I particularly liked Althea’s. Keep an eye on Louise. She’s produced two stunning dresses, well executed and designed. She might walk away with the show. Arina’s dress didn’t get a comment last night, but take a second look. Qystal also presented an elegant, flattering dress to leave last week’s less attractive effort forgotten. Special mension goes to Ra’mon for a dress everyone said looked like a bowling bag.
The last two standing for the elimination were Mitchell and Malvin. Mitchell, who made the baggiest, oversized, most-ill constructed shorts imaginable, put them under a cardigan and tank top. (Remember, last week Mitchell sent a model down the runway almost naked by putting a shirred neckline on a sheer sack.) Malvin was the androgynous person. He showed great passion and sensitivity in his garment. His concept was an egg in a nest. He created some beautiful lines in his draping, which were lost in the end. His ensemble started having great humor when he talked of putting the model in jodhpurs because they would look like chicken thighs. Then, to carry out the bird theme he put a black organza tank top covered with feathers underneath. I was very disappointed to see Malvin go, I’m sure he would have continued to be entertaining. I don’t see Mitchell lasting.
The big news on Models of the Runway is the girls’ attraction to Logan. They, too, were disappointed that Mitchell wasn’t eliminated because he’s a “model jumper and can’t sew.”

IMO, Shirin flat out won. Back in the day, I would have worn that outfit in a minute.
In only two episodes, it was clear to me, the completely obtuse, that Malvin is 'concept'. Based on his description of chicken-egg, I would have worn his outfit just on principle. I will miss him.
I am addicted to watching the development of relationships between the designers and watching their particular aesthetics and strengths in design emerge.
Mitchell should go home. I tire of him.

Shirin/s dress was beautiful. I would also like to know the technique she used. The coat was a great finishing touch. Irina's blue dress was great. There are so many good designers they all don't get mentioned. Good show.
I agree, Mitchell either shows the talent that was supposed to get him on the show or go home. I can understand the disadvantage of having inaccurate measurements in the first show, but he could have shown more ingenuity. His construction skills on the second show ruined what could have been a good (not great or outstanding) outfit. His work has got to be better than this.
When did they stop calling them "maternity clothes"? I think it was when the fascination with pregnant beautiful celebrities really "bloomed" in the last couple of years.
The name "maternity" reminds the wearer that she's about to be a mom. Designers' new marketing term, "pregnancy chic", lets women feel sexy and special and doesn't remind them that there's a lifetime of work ahead! I say give the pregnant ladies all the encouragement they can use. It will hardly reduce their ankle swelling, but it will give them a boost.
This is also part of the "hot mama" trend, which I bet is a comfort to many who don't want to lose their pre-pregnancy sexiness and a stress to others who feel pressure to keep up while covered with spit-up and who are so tired they can barely stand.
I didn't see the show, but the stills above tell the story - pregnancy is sure in style! I'd just like to see a pregnant woman who could stand to be wearing those heels! :)
The technique is "Lattice Smocking" or "Canadian Smocking". It is fun and quick to do and very versatile. It looks like she only did one row.
I think we stopped using the term "maternity" when men started saying "We're pregnant". Ah, would that that were true!
I can't believe that Melvan made that Urban Outfit that looked like a Chicken carrying a egg. I think that his designs aren't quite ready for the Western Culture. His style is more for the Eastern Culture that like wearing clothes that are similar to Cartoon Characters.
