When Althea said she was making a straight skirt with a smoking jacket, I thought—how trite—but Tim encouraged her.

I like Epperson’s dress. The judges called it sexy and chic, applauded his appliquéd stretch fabric and said Epperson was an obvious craftsman. I thought the dress was edgy, elegant, and original.

I’m so sorry Johnny, your dress was awful. One of the judges said, “The purse is the most interesting thing about this outfit.”—and it’s painfully true.

What last night’s Project Runway lacked in exciting design, it made up for with jarring or entertaining one-liners. You can usually expect one or two from Tim Gunn: “I’m afraid it looks like she’s been rolling around in bed.” He said of Qristyl’s first design. Then, he asked Carol Hanna, “Is this design robbing your model of her youth?” Heidi Klum told one designer, “You just aged her 10 years and for a model that’s like dog years.”

This week the designers were asked to design for a client—who turned out to be their model. They were told to make a garment for a special industry event. What the model wears could be her ticket to the future. Make the models stand out and be noticed so that agents, designers, and press can see their impeccable sense of style; and their ability to wear, and sell a look.

All three judges were new. Even though I agreed with most of their discussion comments, I didn’t agree with their winning choice as Althea. When she said she was making a straight skirt with a smoking jacket, I thought—how trite—and Tim encouraged her. When I saw the three-piece suit on the runway, the skirt was too short, the jacket was too open, and the bodice was too frumpy. It looked well made, but trampish. The judges loved it, called it very chic, and said they would wear it. What do I know?

The majority of the designs were silhouettes we’ve seen many times but there were a couple of nice details. For example, the belt on Irina’s outfit pulls it together.

saved otherwise ho-hum designs. Which dresses did you like?

Skymom writes: The "smoking skirt suit" didn't seem like a bad concept to me, but the finished look was unimpressive. Every bit of it looked poorly fitted, to the point that it was impossible to see if it started out with good lines at all. I wonder what Nina or Michael would have thought. They tend to see the designs in a broader perspective than the "celebrity-stylist" judges do.

Lacey_Loftin writes: I totally agree! That suit was just wrong! All wrong fitting really. I would have been more impressed if Epperson had won. To sew on that kind of fabric and have it lay correctly is extremely difficult! He should have one, and I thought he might, oh well...what do I know. I defiantly would not have bought that suit thing.

DAE writes: I am hoping Althea's suit looked a lot better in person. It did not look well made or flattering. I think her model sold the judges more than the outfit did. I loved Carol Hanna's purple soft and hard dress. It was beautiful and fit her model perfectly. Epperson's dress was interesting but did not flatter his models figure (or lack of one.) Good designs. What's up with all the guest judges?

Kate_W writes: I was also disappointed that Qristyl took Tim Gunn's advice. Since she had been dinged on the previous episode for not being strong enough (as a partner with Epperson), I wondered if the comment was made to see how much she would back down. From the brief glimpse we had of Qristyl's first dress, it looked edgier and more interesting than I expected. She should have stuck with her original idea. She definitely brought a different point-of-view to the show. I will miss her.

I agree that Epperson's design was the best. Catching him with a tear in his eye was a little much, but ...

As far as Althea's design -- meh.

I wouldn't be surprised if Sharin is in the top three. Qristyl should have ignored Tim Gunn's advice. From what I saw of her first dress it looked better than the one she finished.

EllenLumpkinBrown writes: I agree! I did not understand the selection of this suit -- I guess you had to be there. I liked Epperson's dress -- I thought it was a fantastic use of fabric and draped beautifully. Pairing it with those fierce boots and one bangle exuded confidence and sexiness to me. I think the judges missed the mark.
