Hip-Hop Halloween
October 20th, 2009 in reader's closetMy granddaughter, Shoshana, and my husband, Stan, following their interest in music, started watching musicals with 50's themes. Shoshana decided she just had to have a poodle skirt for Halloween 2008 and this was the result. I made the skirt and vest from a heavy-weight polyester-cotton blend, The vest was lined with a colorful cotton so it became reversible and wearable with other clothes in her wardrobe. The poodle itself was my first attempt at free-motion applique (having only ever used my Janome 10001 built-in machine embroidery features previously). The record was quite a challenge and after much debate, sacrificed one of my grandmother's old folk dance records. With directions I found on the 'net, I found out how to turn an old sock into a bun holder and made up her hair with the record sandwhiched between the bun and her head.
